Update

This song is for Linda.

The lyrics are very fitting for how her early relationship with Erik might have developed, she having ‘taken a chance’ on someone like Erik.

There are of course consequences to following someone like Erik but this song doesn’t dwell on them and neither does Linda. This song rather gives an ode to the pleasure found in such extremes. Linda’s belief in Erik and his goals despite her current situation is reflected in the desperate quality of the songs chorus. For Linda following Erik isn’t just about his goals but also becoming more like him. Embodying I’m herself the power and the appeal she finds in Erik.

It was important to me to reflect the autonomy of Linda’s actions even if the dynamic that exists between her and Erik is very unequal. Linda chose Erik, and that means that she will not let him go easily.

When i first heard this song in the context of bloody waters, I imagined an injured but not down for the count Linda, suiting up to find Erik.

This song related Erik’s state of mine to me in chapter two. The sense of accomplishment intermixing with feeling of dissatisfaction/worry/paranoia.

While most of the lyrics aren’t very relevant, the words ‘maybe it’s in the gutter, where I left my lover’ caught my attention repeatedly.

In the story it’s not clear if erik feels guilt or any real negative emotions over his decision with Linda. In truth he himself seems to be mostly numb to any feelings of loss. But for me this song helps communicate the state of mind and feelings erik himself may not acknowledge.
