I just put this in the tags from the Cockles zoom I reblogged from you but I thought I should share here too and go a bit more in depth:

I went through years and years of speech therapy for a speech impediment that I have (it's not completely better but whatever) and so I had to practically learn how to force my mouth into the certain letter positions for certain sounds. Day after day I would have to repeat them because I had trouble with the majority of the alphabet.

B and M are not the same at all. Your lips just do different things for them.

B and N are also very different. Your mouth doesn't shut for the N sound. So at the end of 'man' it's open, tongue resting against the back of your top row of teeth. Your mouth does shut for the B sound(for the most part depends on if you pop it). Your lips are closed, maybe a bit pursed.

So when one says 'Man' they go: *lips together* *mouth open for 'a' sound* *bring tongue up and start closing your mouth slightly as it comes to rest at the back of top row of teeth* *mouth is open until person speaking shuts it*

When one says 'Babe': *lips together and apart for 'b' sound* *mouth open as you make the 'a' sound* *bring lips shut again as you make another 'b'* *'e' is silent* *mouth is shut if not a little pursed depending on whether you pop your 'b's*

Anyway, just some food for thought from someone who has to spend way too much time thinkinh about how they speak or they slur their words. Hope it makes sense :)

thank you for expanding!! it does make a lot of sence, and i've had some anon's chime in on this as well (people who study linguistics and some who are hard of hearing and can read people's lips very well) and yeah i definitely agree!
