one thing about studying language is you HAVE to chill out about your brain hiccupping regualrly. it happens, its normal, forgetting smth is the first step towards being sort of remembering something

anyway i like literally just read, in english my native language, the word "transgender" as "teenager", so i processed a phrase "whether or not being a teenager is a choice," which was not what was written. It happens sometimes. u know.

Has anyone ever noticed that reading a story is a little bit faster in a language you already speak

i know like. idk how many characters now. at a guess somewhere around 1k that im very solid on and then another, idk, 300-500 that im familiar with but dont necessarily know all the meanings of and couldn't write if you put a gun to my head. anyway this is fun bc thats so far from a guarantee that ill understand or even be able to guess the meaning of words or phrases made entirely up of characters i know well. and not just poems and proverbs and proverb-adjacent phrases like. 捉迷藏 for example. thats hide and seek babey. and not only that but i have in fact seen this very phrase before in fucking uhh guardian and i think that was actually why i added 捉 to da rotation months ago

ok anyway now im thinking about different languages ive played in and the way they use words like to make/to write/to do/to play/to use etc that kind of word. general kind of Action Taken Something Created/Accomplished/Changed type of word. and i think always my favorite language is whatever language playground im currently playing in and chinese (current target language) has a lot of words/characters that are exciting in this respect but i always will have such a soft spot in my heart for french language word "faire" for being the first word-learned-through-language-aquiring that really made me understand how fun and exciting other languages are. it's the same but different. it's so different but now you have to look at your native language with new eyes and you realize it's exactly the same. except in the ways its not. i want to learn every single language on the whole planet earth.

hm. historic first! understood a sentence correctly, then checked with the translation and misread the translation and thoufht i understood it wrong.

so whats the deal with 㐬 actually. you know it from 流, that star, but theres a freaking bunch of things with 㐬 as the phonetic component. but every time i see it im like man whats her deal. ok hang on 𠫓 is derived from 育 but thats still like not really 川 at thw bottom, right, its like 儿 with third leg in the middle. what goes on whats going on why is that why is it likr that . oh thank you pleco says ‘“流”字右边是“㐬”, 不是“巟”’ thank you ive never met 巟 before in my life but now i know. i guess maybe its just a variant of 川 we pull out wjen somebody is a very special watery boy? i didnt even question this with 朵 not really being 几 i was just like ok ✅ but now that i think about it it is a little odd i cant think of any other characters that dont have 朵 in them that do a right falling stroke blunted like that. anyway maybe one day i will learn some etymology or history or something

oh and theres also 充 which is its own character and doesnt. SEEM related except havign the same radical on top but hey now i saw “㳘 .” 定义 是 "<文> 1 动 山泉向下流。2 拟声 模拟水流动的声音。" i will surely never see this character in a sentence in real life. im glad i went on this little journey.

if anyone wants a language acquisition update btw. still acquiring. ran out of lessons on the immersive chinese app sadly so for da moment im just mixing up hanly/duchinese/watching tv. (well i still use the immersive chinese app for listening practice but for adding new words i have to outsource). reading comprehension is increasing in leaps and bounds like very noticeably so and i think listening comprehension is still improving too but not as drastically. its beeeeennnnn almost 6 months!! having fun isnt hard when u got a library card and so on.

there kind of comes a point in studying a language where when youre acquiring new vocabulary you need to be able to read the dictionary definition of a word, and unfortunately this point comes before the point where you have acquired enough vocabulary to read the dictionary
