Ben Franklin Elementary 2nd Grade, Social Studies & Music Ms. Hodgins & Mr. Miller

In Ms. Hodgins’ second-grade class, we learned about Langston Hughes & The Blues and students wrote their own blues poems to perform for the class. We started by learning about the term “blues” and discussing what it meant to have the blues as well as some of the situations that might give someone the blues. Students gave examples like losing pets, breaking toys, and friends moving away as some of the things that might give someone the blues. 

We also learned about Langston Hughes and his blues poetry and brainstormed why people during that time period might be feeling the blues. Finally, we learned about the structure of blues poems and worked together to create a collective class blues poem that repeated the first line and ended with a line that rhymed. Here’s how it went: 

“News Blues” Hi Blues, what’s the news? Hi Blues, what’s the news? Where are you Blues? Gimme some clues!

Afterwards, students wrote their own blues poems and performed them for the class. After each performance, we practiced giving compliments and meaningful feedback to each performer. Check out their performances below! +
