“The stupid roof is troublesome.” Maddie mumbles to herself. “I guess that I can’t help, huh? We’ll need to replace the tiles.” She asks the elderly man next to her.
“Whoever did it, he didn’t do it properly. That’s why the water’ showing through. The roof tiles will have to be replaced entirely.” The man sighs and scratches his head. “I’m getting to old for this though. I’ll send my son over and have him do it for ya. Is that good?”
“As long as it gets done and it won’t fall and kill me, I’m good.”
“Don’t worry. My son’s lazy, but he knows what he’s doing.” He lets out a soft laugh and bows his head, heading out the door. He gathers his workers and they leave on an old van.
Sighing, Maddie closes the front door and returns to the room she’ll be staying in during her misfortunate relocation. She had booked a short vacation on Jeju Island for two weeks, but her reservation disappeared from the hotel’s system after a system failure, causing all bookings to be put on hold. The staff had to relocate their customers to nearby hotels and lodgings. With all the other places full, she got an apology and a full refund with a promise of a completely paid vacation for two weeks at their expense for her next visit. With no where to stay, she was lucky enough to remember a friend of hers. Despite only knowing her via internet and there’s no guarantee the person isn’t a serial killer or what she said she is, Maddie had no other choice. Luckily that wasn’t the case and the friend is as nice as she is online.
The house is young, being only built a few months prior. After two days, Maddie noticed a problem with the roof tiles, especially after one of them nearly cracked her head like a hardboiled egg. ““
Closing the door after waving the old man goodbye, Maddie heads towards the room she’s claimed as her own. It’ll be a whole another day before the tiles can be fixed. Plopping down on her bed, she grabs her phone, sending a text to her friend to tell her about the roof.
Glancing at his watch, he heads towards the house with a sigh. “Hello?” He calls out as he rings the bell. ”I’m here to fix the roof.” He tugs on his cap, looking through the windows to find any sight of anyone. ”Is anyone home? Hello?” He goes around to the back of the house. ”I can’t come tomorrow so I’m here to fix it now.”
Groaning at her headache, Maddie buries her head under the covers, feeling the buzzing in her head. Reaching for her phone, she texts her friend a message, asking her to bring food and medicine when she visits the next day. She plans to sleep until then, or when the guy comes to fix the roof, whichever comes first.
Sighing at the lack of answer, he grabs his ladder from the truck. Climbing up to the roof, he sighs again and pulls out his phone. “Yah, hyung. Remember the house built a few months ago? Do you have the same roof tiles?” He pauses, glancing around at the roof. ”I need enough to redo the entire thing. Those idiots just piled the tiles on and the roof is leaking. I don’t know what the damage is so I need to peel off everything. I’ll try to salvage some of the tiles though. You think you can save whatever you have for me?” He rolls his eyes and an inaudible groan. ”Yeah, yeah. I owe you, okay?” He hangs up and shoves the phone into his pocket.
The sound of pounding on the roof wakes her. Sitting up, she pulls the covers off and gets out of bed. she grabs a jacket and heads outside, looking up on the roof. “Hello?”
“Oh, someone is home.”
“Who are you?” Maddie asks, the sun blocking her vision. She can only see the outline of a person, judging from the voice, a young man.
“I’m here to fix the roof. I rang the doorbell before but no one answered.”
“Sorry. I’m a little under the weather.” Maddie feels her body sways in the heat under the sun.
“Then you should be in bed. Don’t worry about it. I’ll fix it as soon as I can. You should take care of yourself and leave this to me.”
Maddie nods her head and returns into the house, stopping by at the kitchen.
Placing the tiles into the crate, movement catches his attention. He looks over the side of the roof and watches as the girl places a pitcher of lemonade, a glass and some sandwiches for him before heading back inside the house. “This is going to take forever.” He pulls out his phone again and dials a familiar number. ”Hey, listen. Something came up and I won’t be able to make it tomorrow. You’ll need to find someone else.” He places the phone in the crate and turns the speaker on.
“What are you talking about? We’re all waiting for you.”
“Well, I’m sorry Sehun. I just can’t make it.”
“What’s so important that you’re ditching us?”
“I have a job to do. A roof needs patching up.”
“You rather work than hang with us?”
“Work is work. It’s more important than anything to keep a promise made. I need to finish this before I can do anything. The customer’s a close friend so I really have to do it for her.”
“So it’s a girl. You’re ditching us for a girl.”
“Yah, Oh Sehun. Shut up.”
“Che! Whatever. I hope you fall.” He jokes, hanging up immediately.
“This horrible kid.” He wipes the sweat from his brow and resumes working, stretching his right leg out. The last thing he needs is to add another cut to his leg. There are already two from clumsiness.
“Hyung!” A cheerful face pops up from the ladder.
“Omo!” He flinches at the sudden voice. ”Aish.” Annoyed at the other’s appearance and nearly sending him flying off the roof, he lifts a hand to pretend to hit the other. ”Yah, wanna die?”
“Nope. I’m here to help.”
“Aren’t you going out with the boys?”
“Nah. They aren’t as important as this.”
He glances towards the younger male as the other pulls the tiles off, putting them neatly in the crate. “So you rather help me out? What do you get out of this?”
“I just want to help, hyung.”
“Yah, Huang Zi Tao. It’s not that simple, isn’t it?”
“Well, it’s been a long time so I decided to come visit.” He looks up with a pout. ”Can’t I visit, Changmin hyung?”
Changmin scoffs at Tao’s reply. “Whatever. Just help me lift off all the tiles. There’s a lot of stuff I have to do.”
“How long is this going to take you?” Tao tosses the tiles into the crate, earning a smack to the head by Changmin when they hit against each other. ”What?”
“Don’t break them. I need to use those.”
“Oh, I thought you were throwing them away.” Tao reaches for the rope hanging on the pulley and hooks the handle of the crate on it. he carefully lowers the crate down the the ground. ”I’ll grab the other crates.” Climbing down the latter, Tao grabs the crate full of tiles and brings it over to the other crates. He lifts the stack of three crates off the back of the truck and heads over to the pulley, hooking two of the three crates on it. “Catch.” He swings the third crate over towards Changmin who catches it barely.
“If it falls on your head and crack it, I’m not sending you to the hospital.” Changmin frowns at the waterproof mat under the tiles. He tugs it up and his frown deepens. ”This isn’t good.”
“What happened?” Tao frowns at the look of the spot under the mat. ”That doesn’t look good.”
“Let’s hurry and get the tiles off.”
Turning the car into the small road, she heads towards the house at the end. She pulls up next to the truck and kills the engine. “Changmin? Where are you?”
“Jie~!” Tao rushes out of the house, pulling the girl into a hug.
“What are you doing here? Where’s Changmin?”
“The bathroom.”
Changmin walks out with a sigh, his eyes meeting the girl’s right away. “Noona, you’re back.”
“Yeah, my friend needed me to pick up something for her so I came back.” She glances towards the roof. ”How’s it going?”
“Lousy. I think you might want to sue. They skimped out on the material quality and the roof has to be redone.”
“Great, just great.” She groans in frustrations.
“Hanna?” Maddie stands at the front door, a blanket around her shoulders and rubbing her eyes tiredly. ”Did you get it?”
“Yeah, I got it.”
“I have to finish layering the roof first before it rains. I’ll need to do it when I have the materials.”
“Jie! I want some of that cake you have in the fridge!” Tao grabs her shoulders and push her towards the house.
“Changmin, I want an estimate on the roof!”
“After I get the supplies, noona!” Changmin yells back after her, watching as Tao tugs her into the kitchen, probably to clean it out of its contents. He looks up at the sky after a rumble enters his ears. ”I better hurry.”
“Hanna?” Maddie sits down at the counter, the smell of food entering her nose. ”Hungry.”
“Here’s some porridge. Eat it, take your medicine, and then head back to bed.” Hanna places a glass of water and some medicine in front of her sick friend. ”I’ll pamper you until you’re back in good health.”
Maddie turns her head as thunder roars outside. “Is it going to rain?”
“I hope not. Hyung’s still outside.” Tao frowns as he stirs the pasta boiling in the pot. ”Is it done yet?”
“No, stop poking it.”
The rain clouds starts to gather, darkening the sky into a gloomy grey. The sound of thunder booms overhead as lightning cracks and slithers in the cloud linings. An extra loud boom causes the man on the room to flinch.
“Aish!” Changmin curses loudly, irritated at the pain on his thumb. The finger throbs and blood oozes out. ”Tsk!” He puts the brink in place and hopes it’ll put up until the storm is over. Heading to the ladder, he glances around for his phone, sighing as he spots it on the roof. He reaches over, only to flinch at the loud boom, accidentally pushing the phone into the waterproof mat. ”Shit!”
“Just sleep and concentrate on getting better.”
“Will the pasta be okay? Will I wake up to realize we’re all out of food?” Maddie yawns tiredly, exhaling deeply.
“I hope not. I’ll murder him if he eats everything.” Hanna smooths out the duvet. ”I’ll set up the other guest room for him and force sleeping pills down his throat if that’s what it takes to get him stop eating everything.” She jokes with a grin. ”Don’t worry. If there’s not enough food for the both of us, I’ll give it to you.”
“What about you?”
“I’ll be fine. It won’t be the first time I went without a meal.” She places the pitcher of water on table next to the bed. ”Enough chit-chat. Bedtime, Missy.”
“Yes, mom.” Maddie scoffs in annoyance.
“Don’t you roll your eyes at me, young lady.” Hanna retorts in her mother-voice. The teasing scowl disappears, replaced by a smile. ”Night, rest well. Call if you need anything.” Heading to the door, she grabs the doorknob. “I’ll dress Tao in a butler suit and force him to cater to you if I have to.” With that, she pulls the door close.
“My personal butler? Sounds nice.” Maddie snuggles closer into her comforter and sighs contently. The sound of the clock soothes her to sleep, making her eyelids feel heavier and heavier. Soon, her eyes closes and her body is serenade by sleep.
“It’s pouring outside.” Tao lifts up his long legs on the couch. ”Is hyung still out there?” He flinches as thunder booms outside, sending shivers up his back.
“Did you do something bad?” Hanna teases with a smirk.
“N-no, what made you say that?”
“You look really scared.”
“Psh! No I’m not!” The hair on his back stands on its end at another loud boom. With a loud ‘eep’, he jumps and plops down face first on the couch, pulling the blanket over his head.
“I thought you didn’t do anything bad. What are you scared of?” Hanna asks, her voice laced with amusement.
On the roof, Changmin leans closer, reaching for his phone that’s probably dead due to water damage. Just a little closer and…
Maddie flinches, her eyes widening at the sudden pressure on the bed, the feeling of a presence pressing down on her. She looks up to find a man, a topless, wet man on top of her. To be more precise, Changmin, topless and wet on top of her with his legs straddling her and his forearms on either side of her head, and warmth spreading throughout her body from the connection on her lips. The wild thumping of her heard nearly drowns out the screaming from of her friend. Even the wetness of the bed can’t seem to shake her out of the trance she’s put in.
Extra *alternative ending*:
On the roof, Changmin leans closer, reaching for his phone that’s probably dead due to water damage. Just a little closer and…
Hanna frowns at another loud boom. ”Do you hear that?”
“Of course I didn’t. It’s so loud, how can I not hear…?”
“I’m going upstairs to check on Maddie.” Hanna jumps off the couch and heads towards the stairs.
“W-wait. Take me with you.” Tao nearly trips over the blanket as he rushes after the girl like a five year old.
“Maddie?” Hanna pushes the door open. The chill hits her at full force, wetness seeping into her pants.
“What’s going on?” Tao asks as he enters the room. He frowns at the roofless ceiling, the rain dropping on his head. “Why is the roof gone?”
“Give me a hand here.” Hanna reaches for the large piece of her roof, frowning at the water getting into the room. “This is bad.”
“I’ll go find hyung and see what’s wrong.” Tao turns to leave, dropping the blanket in the hall.
“Tao!”
“What?” He turns so quickly that he loses his footing on the wet floor, slipping and bumping into the wall.
“I found him.” Hanna pulls off the waterproof mat, revealing a topless Changmin on the bed, his legs straddling her sick friend, his forearms on either side of her head and…
“Wow! Talk about kissing in the rain.”
Changmin jumps back as if burnt. “This isn’t want it looks like!” He shouts defensively.
“You mean my roof didn’t cave in, my ceiling didn’t collapse, and my room isn’t soaked and flooded?”
“Well, I…”
“Just hurry and get it fixed before I drown.” Hanna pulls him off the bed and shoves him out the room.
“So…I’m guessing that blush isn’t from your fever.”
“I…”
“Let’s get you dry. I’m just lucky the room doesn’t have much and you only uncovered the bed and the dresser.”
“I’ll help you move. I’m wet enough at it is.”
The next hour consists of the two girls moving everything out of the waterlogged room while the two boys patch up the roof temporarily. The night pass peacefully after that, despite the roaring of the storm outside.
In the middle night, Changmin finds himself awake as he shares a bed with Tao. He looks over to the floor where Maddie and Hanna are sleeping on the air mattress. With the other room’s ceiling caved in, this was the only room they could sleep in. He sighs and frowns at the glow near Hanna. ‘Must be a text message.’ He smiles as Hanna snuggles closer under the covers.
Tao shifts on the inside of the bed, pulling the duvet closer to his chin. His breath evens out again and his sleep deepens.
"推他下床." The text says, rushing towards his phone.
"為什麼?" He replies, confused and curious.
"就推他下床嘛." She says, a hint of mischief in her voice. "如果你想吃我煮的東西的話,你就會做."
"好, 好. 我知道了." He answers with a pout.
Without warning, Changmin finds himself on the air mattress after a strong kick to his back. His heart thumping like a hummingbird’s, he watches as Maddie stares at him, woken up the sudden pressure on the mattress. “S-sorry.”
“What happened?” Maddie mumbles under the duvet, her eyes roaming shyly over Changmin’s face.
“Tao kicked me off the bed.” Changmin replies, rubbing the ache in his back with a groan.
"現在,你滾下床,然後不要讓他逃走." She asks, sending him the message.
"姐, 我喜歡你的想法." He replies, a smirk on his lips.
“現在,你滾下床,然後不要讓他逃走.“ She asks, sending him the message.
“姐, 我喜歡你的想法.“ He replies, a smirk on his lips.
“I should…” Changmin’s attempt to leave fails when he finds Tao’s body rolling towards him. He turns over to Maddie, protecting her from Tao’s much large frame. “Aish.” Changmin curses as the younger male a thousand times in his head as Tao snuggles up against his back, an arm thrown haphazardly over Changmin’s body and long legs tangling over his legs, crossing over to Maddie’s.
“Maybe I can…” Maddie lets out a small whimper when Hanna turns and throws her arm Maddie’s waist, hugging her close. It doesn’t help when Hanna’s leg is thrown across hers.
Changmin sighs dejectedly as Hanna’s leg hooks onto his. With Tao on one side and Hanna on the other, he finds himself trapped in between their strange sandwich. “Sorry.”
“It’s okay.” Maddie mumbles, her cheek growing red.
“Is your fever getting worse?” Changmin lifts up his hand to her forehead.
“I-I’m okay.” Maddie replies, lowering her gaze.
“You know, you’re really pretty.” Changmin slowly leans in and…
Hours later, Hanna sits up sleepily, turning to her right as Tao sits up. “So tired.” Getting up, she climbs over the sleeping figures and gets onto the bed, pulling the covers over her body.
“姐~!” Tao whines with a pout, climbing into bed with her. ”So sleepy.”
Changmin sits up with a groan, his head feeling heavy. “It’s morning already?” He glances to the sleeping form of Maddie next to him. “Maybe a few more minutes.” Lying back down, he wraps his arms around Maddie and returns to sleep.
