So, apparently, if you backdate a post to 1969, Tumblr will just straight up delete the post. I guess this has to do with Unix time. (I made a backdated post for testing purposes, and it just disappeared after I changed the date to 1969.)

EDIT: The post reappeared on my profile, but its date is set to July 29, 2025, which was presumably the date that I originally posted it.

I was trying to figure out what the earliest possible backdate is, assuming that Tumblr would just automatically change any earlier dates to the earliest possible time (like trying to schedule posts to a later date than the last possible date will just schedule it to the last possible date). Instead, when I set the date to 1969, it deleted the post entirely. I was able to successfully set it to 1996, though.

I was able to conclude the following:

Backdating to a super early date makes the post appear at the very end of your blog (implying that it's the oldest post). I think Tumblr even specifically made this into a feature, so it gives you more control over the order in which posts appear on your blog.

It also affects the date that shows up on the post.

Fortunately, however, backdated posts will still show up when sorting by "Latest" in a tag. (REALLY REALLY HOPE IT STAYS THAT WAY! Reason: Scheduled posts)

Now, you can't set your post date to the future, which means that any scheduled posts will, by necessity, be backdated. (I also tried to backdate to a future time on the same day, but that just changed the time on the post to current time.) You can still change the date to the date it became public afterwards, assuming you still have access to your Tumblr account by the time the post is public. At any point before the scheduled post becomes public, you can still change the date to anything up to the present, so with this method, you can at least prevent posts from showing up in a weird order in the future. Of course, if you want to ensure that all your scheduled posts show up as posted later than all your current posts, then you will need to constantly update the dates, which may get annoying. I tried it, and it looks like Tumblr actually auto-updates the post dates on any scheduled posts to match the publishing time. I guess what that means is that if you really want a backdated post, you should post it now.
