This backyard just doesn’t work for us anymore
That’s what I blurted out while trying to grill burgers last weekend. It was 95 degrees. I was juggling a plate of half-frozen patties, dodging puddles from the last storm, and watching the kids run around on uneven ground while the lawn chairs kept sinking into soft dirt. It was chaotic. Not charming.
And as much as I love our little backyard—we’ve had so many birthday parties and wine-at-sunset evenings out there—it’s never really had a proper setup. No real space for seating. No patio, just a cracked slab from who-knows-when. And don’t even get me started on the drainage. We’ve been talking about fixing it “someday” for about three years now.
Well. I think “someday” is finally here.
Welcome to the Hardscape Rabbit Hole 🕳️
It started with a Pinterest binge and ended with me Googling things like “paver patio Olathe” and “retaining wall ideas Kansas yards.” That’s when I stumbled across this page from Top Tier Landscaping — Olathe Hardscaping Services. The guide’s here: https://toptierlandscapingkc.com/olathe-ks/hardscaping/
First of all, they totally get the chaos I’ve been dealing with. Their post even talks about a family in south Olathe who had flooding issues by their porch—and how they fixed it with a raised paver patio and some smart drainage solutions. That is literally my situation.
And then they go into all these ideas I hadn’t even considered. Like integrating retaining walls not just for structure but to carve out space and improve water flow. And adding a fire pit or seating wall to create actual zones in the yard—something we’ve never had. Right now, our grill is just awkwardly parked next to a patch of dying grass. Not exactly an entertainer’s dream.
What Even Is Hardscaping? And Why Do I Want It Everywhere?
Honestly, I used to think hardscaping just meant some stone pavers or maybe a wall here or there. I didn’t really get it.
But this guide reframed it for me—it’s about giving your yard structure and personality. It’s the bones of an outdoor space. And if done right, it solves the stuff you didn’t even know you could fix—like awkward slopes, soggy grass zones, or that weird corner no one uses.
I really appreciated how the page broke it all down—retaining walls, paver patios, stone pathways, even decorative concrete work that doesn’t scream “builder grade.” I’m not into fussy designs or things that require constant babysitting. What I am into? Durable, functional surfaces that look good and actually make the yard more usable.
Reading it honestly made me think about our space differently. I stopped seeing it as a problem and started seeing possibilities.
My Vision (And the Pinterest Board I’ll Pretend I’m Not Obsessively Curating)
Here’s what I’m thinking now:
✅ Paver patio that extends from the back door and creates a real “outdoor room.” Maybe with a pergola or just some lighting overhead.
✅ Retaining wall with built-in seating. The slope near our fence could actually work in our favor.
✅ A fire pit—nothing massive, just something that lets us extend the season into fall.
✅ Strategic drainage so I’m not tiptoeing through puddles in flip-flops.
✅ Decorative border along the new garden beds to finish everything off.
I’m not sure how much of this we’ll tackle all at once. But the vision is starting to feel real. And it’s a big step up from “let’s just throw down more gravel.”
A Backyard That Actually Works
I can picture it now: a Saturday evening with music playing, kids roasting marshmallows, no one tripping over uneven grass, and me not worrying that the lawn will turn into a swamp the next time it rains.
It’s not about having the fanciest backyard in the neighborhood—it’s about having a space that finally fits the way we live. Somewhere that feels like an extension of our home, not an afterthought.
So no, we’re not tearing things up tomorrow. But after reading that guide, I know who I’m calling when we’re ready. I’ve even started measuring things out. (Okay, I might be drawing diagrams on graph paper like it’s a middle school project.)
It just feels good to be moving forward.
Here's to turning chaos into calm. One paver at a time.
