Bad Breeding, Exiled (One Little Indian / Iron Lung, 2019)

Honestly, the third album of the Stevenage, UK, anarcho-hardcore unit Bad Breeding is TOO good. Irritatingly so. First of all, it was produced by Ben Greenberg, who made sure that every second of it would sound like an actual nightmare: dark, heavy and too real. The sound is captivating and draws from modern hardcore, noise rock, classic anarcho punk. 

The packaging is an absolutely great looking homage to Crass Records-style fold-out jackets with lyrics and a political essay that makes a very sensible point about hate as a weapon and the cold class war that’s going on in Great Britain. What really struck me about the political perspective of both the lyrics and the essay is how timely they are: Bad Breeding aren’t aping the anarcho bands of lore, they aren’t using anarchy and 1984-style paranoia to play a part; they’re talking about their concerns as people in Britain in 2019. 

Every song has something that makes it stand out, mostly thanks to a knack for great hardcore punk songwriting. Listen to the driving rhythm fueled by the sudden stops on “Clear Blue Water”; to “Breaking Wheel”, that kinda sounds like if Pissed Jeans were on Crass Records and I don’t think anybody’s ever done that; to the dissonant skronk of "Tortured Reality”. We’ve heard countless songs that sound like the saxophone-smeared dirge of “Theatre of Work”. It seems everybody feels the need to slow down at one point and send a slimy, belligerent snail crawling through the grooves. Few, though, sound like they know what they’re doing as much as Bad Breeding do.

So, irritatingly good: the “problem" here is it’s all spot-on. As negative-minded punks, we have a natural distrust for things that are well done. For God’s sake, Bad Breeding even have the nerve to promote their records and tour with a great-sounding backline. Yeah, I know, "psh, fucking posers". You pick: stay in your comfort zone, or enjoy one of the finest punk records to come out in recent years.

I’ve been busy with glue and scissors and rubber stamps making test press covers. Sometimes I have time to get crazy with these (like stamping all of the Just Urbain/Section Urbane song titles on the Typical System labels or making home made tipon jackets like that Cold Sweat joint) and other times I only have enough spare minutes to repurpose some one panel artwork and slap a logo on. I want all the Iron Lung Records tests to have some kind of art with them. Sometimes it takes me a while to get to it. Anyway I’m gonna be selling some of these off to raise some money for future projects. Maybe discogs. Maybe bigcartel. Maybe just 1st come 1st emails IDK. I have all these and so many more.
