Listen. My picture is in focus, it’s the book cover that isn’t. This was my first read for #nonfictionnovember and it was a wild ride. A collection of essays about the author’s experience as an ambulance attendant during his summers at college — in late 60s/early 70s NYC. A time when ambulance attendants were required to have almost no medical training? Please tell me that has changed by now? Other than most maternity cases, nearly every call he goes on means meeting someone in one of the worst moments of their lives — from tragic accidents and bodies failing at the end of life to acts of violence and family members forcing children and elders into the hospital against their will. Some stories are gruesome, some heartbreaking, a few funny, and a very few uplifting — Scardino’s experiences damage him in ways he can’t explain to anyone at the time. . .
