“Through the Global U Progam, I am now able to articulate my UtahAbroad experiences in a much more meaningful manner than I ever thought was possible.”
Global U Program Study Abroad Reflection
By: Tyler, Learning Abroad Peer Advisor, CAPA in Sydney, Australia
Before going abroad, I knew I wanted to immerse myself in the community as much as possible. In order to earn the Community Engagement badge, I was looking to integrate my community of American friends with the Australian people. I was able to successfully accomplish this through my involvement in CAPA's student government as well as my volunteer work in the Surry Hills community. On a personal level, I have always found myself to be happiest when I engage in a community through volunteer work. My experience at the Salvation Army allowed me to appreciate an aspect of Australian culture that would have gone unnoticed, had I decided not to actively seek it out. During my time with Salvation Army, I was able to positively impact a community who had helped give me such an incredible experience. In both the professional and academic fields, I benefited enormously from my involvement in student government. Through this opportunity, I was in charge of coordinating events for my program that allowed us to interact with our local environment as well as each other. I developed leadership skills that are vital to my academic and professional success and have used this experience as a foundation for my leadership development. Overall, engaging in the Australian community through student government and volunteer work allowed me to develop valuable leadership and communication skills. Through the #GlobalUProgam, I am now able to articulate my #UtahAbroad experiences in a much more meaningful manner than I ever thought was possible.
