But these are .png files which means they have a transparent background and if you don't have an appropriate program the background will lose it's transparency and become white (as if it happens in paint, even if you save the pic as .png file).

Don't worry though, you don't have to download and install some image editing program, especially if you would have no other use for it. You can resize the pic in the code of the badge itself:
