Ice cream holds a special place in my heart.  It was one of the first places that I was invited to review.  That was a great experience even if Mantovani 1946 is no more.

In these days of lockdown, imagine my excitement when I heard that a gelato store was opening within walking distance of me.  I would no longer have the physical impediment (my laziness to walk, given that I can’t drive and we aren’t supposed to take public transport) as an excuse not to give in to my craving for fat and sugar.  If that seems a bit contrived, it is because I am trying to draw a positive slant on life.  Everything is great!  Fantastic!  To quote a particular loud politician, I can have my cake and eat it! 

Gelato, la dolce vita and stracciatella.  These were rather good.   The stracciatella was deliciously smooth with gems of chocolate hidden inside.  The la dolce vita is a new flavour of gelato, creamy and moreish.  Rich and succulent, an ice cream worth having again.

After demolishing this treat, I stood back for a bit to ponder.  Sure, many restaurants are closed now, the sit down dinner scene seems to be on its last legs.  Chances to explore gastronomical delights are sadly curtailed.  Yet, perhaps that means I can sample all of the flavours on offer, guilt free.  With all that is going on, got to enjoy some little luxuries in life.

  Two scoops in a cone was about GBP5 excluding service.

A quiet eating 8/10.

Flavors: Cioccolato al lampone & fedora

Overview: MY TWO FAVORITE FLAVORS IN ONE CUP I AM IN HEAVEN.  I bought a size larger than I usually do.  It's like the best going away present I could have asked for. I found out from my cool gelato pal (I go there so often one of the younger gelataio and I have become friends) that they hardly ever make it because the chef doesn't like it - he prefers cioccolato all'arancia - so to see it there tonight was the best treat before I leave for a month and a half vacation back home.  And of course I paired it with my standard fedora, a flavor so refreshing and delightful I crave it literally every day.

Flavors: Tiramisù & Delizia Bianca 

Overview: Honestly, I'd forgotten I'd taken this photo, so I don't remember a ton about this cone.  I think they rebranded the flavor I got the other day as "Delizia Bianca" because it was definitely coffee & white chocolate cream.  And the tiramisù was interesting - there were, I think, ginger/molasses cookies in it (but I could be wrong).  Empirically delicious, but not my favorite.  If I recall correctly, I wanted something less complicated tasting - their tiramisu is really good and there is good separation between the different aspects.  However, the white chocolate cream was out of this world.  Super sweet, but well worth it.  I give it a B.

Flavors: Stracciatella di Mente & Delizia di Caffè

Overview: I really needed a break from studying/writing, so my obvious choice was food and the obvious choice of food is always gelato.  Here, I have some regrets.  I should have actually considered the fact that I would have to taste these two flavors together - coffee and mint is not the best combination.  Also, they had a pignola flavor, which would have been way more interesting, but I wasn't feeling adventurous enough, I suppose.  The coffee was delizia di caffè, and had this lovely thick white chocolate paste on top.  It was fantastic.  The mint was all right, but surprisingly, not earth-shattering.  How dare you, Badiani!?  Though, I suppose they can't win at everything.  I would actually prefer Gelateria Alba's strawberry to Badiani's strawberry.  Anyway, this cone it served its purpose: distracting me from schoolwork and forcing me to walk a mile so my legs didn't atrophy (yet).
