20 Things That Mean Something Together
The simplicity of a meal in brown paper bag.
The lines in the design consist of vertical and horizontal lines. The brown paper bags are the outline of the design and display the concept of encompassing each lunch item in a brown paper bag. The bags are aligned both vertically and horizontally to create the geometric shape of a rectangle. Inside the bag, the objects are both vertical and horizontal.
At the top of the design the bread is horizontal. The bread is the largest sized object so it draws attention here. The other points of attention exist from the Rules of Third grid. The Chips Ahoy cookie package and the Ziploc box are located at the intersections of the grid. As these objects are a vibrant blue hue, the eye is attracted to these objects. Therefore, the visual design is consists of statistical compositional movement. The eye is bouncing from one point to the next with no guidance from continuations of lines or gradations.
The bright and vibrant hues of each object make the overall visual gain attention. Furthermore, various geometric shapes such as circles, rectangles , squares and ovals exist from the packaging of the food items. Organic shapes are present such as the banana, bread and apple are present. Each object is clearly 3D form as the objects are real.
Negative space exists in between the shapes as well as the outside of the brown paper bags that serve as a frame for the design. The negative space defines the boundaries of positive space and brings balance to the composition. The small amount of negative space leaves room for the eye to relax. As well, the brain can comprehend that each object is present to create a ‘meal in a brown paper bag,’ which is the concept behind the design.
The scale of the visual design is the objects inside of the brown paper bag outline. This again portrays the concept of lunch items in a bag. Each object is in relative similar proportion to one another as the items are all fitting into the bag.
The composition is intended to resonate with the audience as it is common to have meals from a brown paper bag, either self-packed or takeout. This may also create a feeling of nostalgia as brown paper lunches are associated with elementary school. Each of the elements in the design are not identical, however there is a common quality behind each element. Therefore, I hope this design spurs up childhood memories of favourite lunchtime snacks and the surprise awaiting to see what’s inside the bag.

At Quarterdeck, we believe that a lot of today’s issues can be solved by a mindfully prepared piece of seafood. “What am I going to feed my kids so that they grow into healthy and happy adults?” Fish. “What can I do around 1 PM to stay sharp for the rest of the work day?” Eat fish. “How can I best support Cat while she’s running the 119th Boston Marathon on Monday April 20, 2015?” Eat a piece of fish, then make a sign that says, “SEAFOOD STRONG”.
I know how easy it is to run out the door in the morning with $20 to drop on some junk with calories. But, it’s equally easy to save that $20 and pack a healthy, inexpensive meal full of nourishment for your brain and your soul. This week, Chris and I are taking a long, hard look at lunch, and we’ve got some great ideas to share with y’all.
At Quarterdeck, our parameters for a successful lunch are as follows:
Lunch must be delicious.
Lunch must be economical (in both prep time and dollar cost)
Lunch must be healthy.
Lunch should power you up for the rest of your day. You should be excited, not because you’re taking a break from work or school, but because you’re doing something positive for yourself. You are worth it. Your family is worth it. Your Monday night is worth it.
In continuing our cooking class series on meals that aren’t dinner, Chris and I are excited to fill your head with new ideas for great packed lunches that won’t break your diet OR the bank. We feel great about our lunch time decisions, and we want you to feel the same way :)
The seafood on offer will be a large assortment of the daily haul - think New England staples like cod and haddock, alongside seasonally available treats like Ocean Redfish and Shad Roe. This class invites guests of all skill levels and experience to participate.
You are what you eat; why not eat the best? Respect yourself, eat fish.
Class will take place on Monday, April 06, 2015 from 6:30 - 8:30 PM in our kitchen at 175 Main St, Maynard MA 01754.
Class is limited to 10 people. Reservations are allocated on a first come, first serve basis. $75 per person.
