hand holding 10 and/or 28
well i wanna write both of these-- so....
10. happily doing everything with just one hand, if it means they don’t have to let go
When Thorin finally did wake from his injuries after the battle (a non-fatal stab to his chest, somehow luckily missing all of his vital organs), Bilbo was not likely to leave his side anytime soon. Indeed, the hobbit was scarcely seen anywhere else but at Thorin's side while the king was confined to bed rest. The few times he had been seen away from Thorin were only if he went to fetch the king food or water, and very little else drew him away.
Another part of his refusal to leave Thorin's side was his left hand intertwined with Thorin's. Since Thorin had been awake enough to grasp Bilbo's hand in his, when they were close enough, their hands remained together.
Thorin had a scroll in his free hand, reading it slowly as he could efficiently unroll it with a single hand, but he seemed quite unwilling to move his other hand from its place with Bilbo's. Bilbo was attempting to comb through Thorin's hair with his own free hand, but again, neither of them would separate their hands to make their tasks easier.
Every so often, Bilbo's hand would tighten on Thorin's and this gave the dwarf pause, his eyes moving from the scroll to look at Bilbo. There'd be a moment of quiet, as Thorin spoke too quiet and low for anyone but Bilbo to hear and then they'd return to their respective tasks.
Kili was just starting to get sick of the dopey looks they were giving each other, because Fili wasn't awake yet and Tauriel wasn't always around for him to complain to. Really, it was sickeningly sweet and a nephew could only take so much. Somehow, he thought watching his uncle hold hands with Bilbo was worse than if they'd just kiss.
28. grabbing the other’s hand so they don’t fall
The river was difficult to get out of and Thorin was tasking himself with ensuring the entirety of his company had made it out. Even if that meant he had to dive back in to find a dwarf that hadn't quite made it out of the water, or out of the barrels. Thankfully, Dwalin was hauling Ori out of his barrel towards the shore, though the young dwarf was acting like the stone they were made of and struggling to keep himself above the water.
Thorin whipped around, eyes scanning over the barrels to check they were empty. He was counting off his company, noting that they all seemed to have made it to the shore, but he was coming up one member short.
Bilbo was not on the shore and Thorin pushed through the barrels, terror beginning to seize in his stomach. Bilbo had not made it into a barrel, as he remembered. He'd been clinging to Nori's for most of the journey down the river, but it would have been easy for him to slip off and...
A spluttering sound came from a few feet away, back towards the rocks and Thorin waded as quickly as he could, splashing towards the sound. He found the bedraggled hobbit quickly, seizing him under his arms and out of the water. Bilbo squawked, struggling a little as Thorin tried to right him.
"Just.. get me out of the water," Bilbo gasped, a hand clutching at Thorin's arm.
Bilbo did not weigh very much, at least not in comparison to a dwarf and Thorin had wrangled two full-grown dwarves many times in his life. He managed to get them both towards the shore of the river, settling Bilbo onto his feet as they reached the edge.
As he took a step forward, a hand closed around his and he felt Bilbo stumble into his back.
"Sorry," Bilbo gasped, his hand tight on Thorin's as he tried to steady himself. He must have slipped on the wet rocks, because his other hand was gripping the back of Thorin's tunic for leverage. "Sorry, just..."
Thorin twisted his hand gently in Bilbo's grasp, gripping the hobbit's hand in turn and pulling him forward. It caused Bilbo to stumble forward into his side but it meant that Bilbo was no longer struggling to move across the wet rocks.
"Alright?" he asked quietly, looking down at Bilbo as the hobbit looked up.
Bilbo gave a small nod after a moment, his hands remaining tight on Thorin. The moment would be ruined a moment later by the arrival of Bard, but for a second, Thorin thought about sweeping Bilbo off his feet and into his arms. It would be safer, that was why. That's what he told himself.
