No one does sorrowful whimsy like Oliver Postgate and Peter Firmin. Their shows were the soundtrack to my childhood. Touching, sad and wonderfully cute. Most of all, Bagpuss, wherein the saggy old cloth cat would tell the tales of lost objects to his friends, all produced by Postgage and Firmin in their shed. Now childrens programming is a multi-dollar industry or geared towards educating, the magic of simplicity has been lost and I doubt we'll see their like again. But for me, as a child, these strange, magical stories narrated in Oliver Postgates lugubrious tones (he also did most of the voices) brought me so much joy.
This episode of Bagpuss (one of only 13 ever made) has certainly stuck in my mind. I remember the sad story of the elephant toy who had lost its ears reducing me to floods of tears, both of sadness and joy.
