Season 3 is over and Kara has officially put Jimmy in the "Friend-Zone" and honestly... Good For Her! After all the crap Jimmy pulled this season, he deserves it for putting Kara through all that. He played with her mind and heart and she's not letting him off so easily. Jimmy lost a lot of Kara's trust and faith in him, so he's got a lot of making up to do if he has any chance or hope of truly getting together with her if/when the show returns.

My Adventures With Superman S3

Another season done, and it might potentially be our last. Time to unpack what’s been going on with the scrappiest adaption of Superman yet.

Superfamily

Clark - Genuinely disappointed me that they didn't do a "My Adventures With Man" joke title for the episodes where he lost his powers. Clark got comfortable with being Superman so of course that gets stripped from him, and he has to deal with just being a regular guy again. There are plenty of powerless Superman stories where he enjoys being normal which is why I was happy that was not the case this season. MAWS Clark doesn't want to be normal, he wants to be Superman because he enjoys it! And when the writers did the expected "it's not your powers that make you Super" I appreciated how it came in the form of Clark risking his life for others. There was a split second moment where I feared he might actually be dead after that gunshot where the camera focused on his bloody glasses, so kudos to the director for that.

Lois - Adored her dynamic with Jon and Lara this season. Lois was initially uncomfortable with Jon because she didn't want to feel predestined to live her life a certain way. Irony being that Jon's whole deal this season was trying to change the future, meaning he didn't believe in predestination either! Ending the season with her coming full circle from being afraid to take the next major step with Clark to being the one to propose marriage was a nice touch.

Jimmy - Damn his entire plotline this season was a waste of time huh? All that stupid will they/won't they with Kara ate up episodes only to end exactly where they started. Writers let Jimmy down this season, even if his antics continued to provoke plenty of laughs for me.

Kara - Other than Clark she was the MVP this season. She was putting belt to ass in the first fight against Eradicator. Hell she had a badass scene in practically every major fight this season. Plus she got to be a total cutiepie when half of Metropolis was courting her. Truly this is the best adaption of Supergirl even with the major changes to how she works.

Jon and Lara - Jon as the dumbass failson clears the bar as the best conceptualization of Jon Kent. Not hard considering that character has been ass for most of his existence at this point. Whether as the golden retriever himbo Jon or the sulking emo Jonathan, he can't stop crapping the bed. No matter how hard he insists he's Superman, he simply isn't ready yet. It's a heartbreakingly on point take given what's been done with his comic incarnation. As for Lara, she so clearly is a daddy's girl taking after Clark, that I'm left sad at how she doesn't get as much focus as her brother. One of the biggest misses this season is how we never got an episode dedicated to what their lives were like in the future. Instead of wasting time on Jimmy and Kara's dating woes, Jon and Lara battling future Lex should've gotten it's own episode.

Bizarro - I could not tell you why they included this character in this season. I theorized that he was going to sacrifice himself to reempower Clark, which would at least provide a reason for him being here, but instead he survives just fine. Clark has even embraced him as a "cousin" which frankly feels undeserved considering the two did not interact at all.

Villains

Lex - I get what the showrunners are going for here. Like Clark, this is a Lex who isn't "the guy" at the start and has to grow into being that. For the previous two seasons it felt like they pulled it off showing a Lex similar to what the DCEU failed at, growing into a more confident, dangerous Lex. Problem is that this was the season I really expected to watch Lex take some significant steps towards becoming "the guy" in the same way Clark does. Instead it feels like he ran in place. Still doesn't feel threatening or worthy of being Clark's archnemesis. Hell he and Clark still haven't actually had a direct conversation with each other, unless you count alt Lex which I don't. That is a major flaw at this point, instead of wasting time on a Jimmy/Kara plot that went nowhere, more time should've been spent with Lex. Other than a brief vague tease at the end of the season we get no clue what drives him, Lexcorp gets basically no use before it's shuttered unceremoniously, and Lex himself ends up in jail because Waller decided to put him there rather than Superman taking him down.

Brainiac - Every time this guy shows up he reminds you that he is an 11/10 villain in a show that admittedly struggles with villains. And somehow the writers managed to combine the Coluan and Kryptonian origins in a way that I loved! That Brainiac wholeheartedly embraces the Kryptonian conqueror ethos because it provides some meaning to what happened to him adds a whole new layer of messed up to his deal. His involvement in the final three episodes are why those episodes are up there with S2 for me.

Cyborg Superman/Hank Henshaw - I am salty as hell because this was the best adaption of Metallo we are ever going to get. Everything I wanted is here: the military background, his origin as an anti-Superman weapon, his rebellion and crashout over humanity siding with The Alien over him, his fear of the future and anger over feeling helpless. The way it takes three Kryptonians to bring him down, how he pushes Clark to the limit and beyond, and that he has a brief moment of humanity at the end where he disables his self-destruct that keeps him as a sympathetic villain. Everything I love that's been added to comics Metallo is here, it's just given to a character I don't care about! Loved this guy, but it's a double edged sword for me.

Eradicator - In contrast to Henshaw, Eradicator is a nothing character, same as his comics incarnations. He has some cool fight scenes and aura farming moments but otherwise he's just fight scene fodder.

Mxy - Continues to be the best incarnation of the character ever, all of you haters have awful taste. Cackled when the Judge told him to go to hell.

Freaks of the Week - Don't even remember most of them. Whip was fun I guess but the rest were lame and forgettable.

Teases For S4/What I want if we get S4

Clark makes a deal to get his powers back with the dwarf star that's powering the Fortress (amazing concept by the way!). What were the terms of the deal? Was that meant to be Solaris? How does it have a mental connection to Clark and what was the meaning of the visions? Sucks that we don't get any answers.

What's the deal with the Electric powers??? C'mon they keep teasing something going on there but never address it!

Zod? Eradicator briefly shapeshifts into a form that looks a hell of a lot like what you'd expect Zod to be like. Is that meant as a tease for the man himself? Is he out there somewhere?

What was it that Lex saw out there? Darkseid? Mongul? Darkseid got teased last season and the showrunners have said they'd love to do a version of the Warworld Saga. They already pretty much used the costume for it this season!

Who was the Judge for the Mxy episode? A future Superman Prime? A New God? They don't tell us so I have to assume it's someone whose identity is a big deal

New allies for Lex. With Slade and Waller turning on him, I really want Lex to escape and recruit his own loyal henchmen. Get Mercy or Bloodsport or a proper John Corben Metallo as Lex's new muscle. Enough of Slade and Waller.

A Clois marriage can’t go smoothly, especially not with these two neurotic dorks. Give me Mxy trying to crash their wedding!

More focus on the Daily Planet, they were basically sidelined this season

As I typed this up, I struggled with how to rate this season. It had some of my favorite episodes of the series, but also it has glaring flaws I can't ignore. I think I like it better than S1, but S2 remains the best season overall. Right now I have to go with a 7/10. If we get a S4 then I think I can bump it up to an 8, because so much of this season feels like it's setting things up for a S4. If we don't though? Then I am left satisfied, but with the caveat that the pacing and structure of this season could have been much better handled.

If this is the end then man I hope we don't have to wait another 30 years for the next Superman cartoon...
