videopainting 01 - [from the series kondratiev cluster, 2017] - dimensions variable, duration 2:35. - In the late 90's at a period when I was exploring figurative painting while also delving into other media, I got a team of colleagues together and coordinated the first attempts to record material in studio of what I saw as a natural transition between my painting and video experimentation. The main obstacules were related to the lack of immediacy of the video process at the time, it was actually quite tedious and would end up cutting off the natural workflow. The best I could do was to treat the subject directly while recording (eg. light, focus, optics etc). Then in or around 2002 or so vj software could allow for the possibility for "live painting" to a limited degree, often processors would overheat and conputers would constantly blue screen and restart, often applying texture could result in a 24hour render! 2010 this came up again and thanks to new generation video software I could treat my video compositions in real time, immediately seeing what I'm painting, treating the video material with glazes, transparencies, and textures in a constant smooth workflow that wouldn't distract from the creative process of the work (eg. kill the vibe). The kodratiev cluster is a series of videopaintings which explore various traditional subject matter under this process (eg. nude, still life, landscape etc.). At this time this series consists of sixteen works and growing. Originally we had planned to show eight or so of these videopaintings together with the installations of "El Lenguaje de las Cosas" on 60" LED monitors, but a collaboration with a manufacturer fell through. Hopefully a new collaboration with a manufacturer will arise and the possibility of showing these will be possible in the not so distant future.
