Pardon the Interruption
According to a report by market research firm Technavio, three factors will significantly affect the muffin industry over the next three to four years: a growing concern for health, continued experimentation with savory flavors, and an increase in in-store bakeries. The results of the report were published recently in Baking Business.
Health-focused trends can have a large impact on the food and beverage sector, Technavio said, and as consumers around the globe become increasingly health conscious, the baking industry has turned to healthier solutions, like alternative flours and added ingredients such as fruit and chia seeds. Vendors also have been adding new products made with whole wheat, whole grains, or multigrain ingredients.
Now, more than ever, consumers are demonstrating a willingness to experiment with nontraditional muffin flavors. Savory ingredients like meat and cheese are becoming more commonplace, as are seasonings outside of the typical muffin flavor profile. Consumers look to these diverse choices to satisfy cravings at various times throughout the day.
Due in part to the growth of in-store bakeries, shoppers now expect to find a wide variety of products, including muffins, in one location. And they want the opportunity to purchase traditional muffins alongside the more-adventurous, savory options.
