Eagle flying home. . There's a little reservoir near me that's stocked with fish. This eagle and a couple osprey often come by for dinner in the early evening and only stick around till they catch a fish. . As I arrived, I saw this eagle catch a fish and land with it on the ground across the reservoir. It was too far away for a good picture and I didn't want to try to get closer and scare it off. . After dinner the eagle went back down to the water and spent a few minutes just having a nice cool dip, I guess. It'd soak a while, dunk it's head, then hop up on a branch in the water and repeat. . I mostly just had fun watching, but it usually flies off in the same direction after dinner, so I sat there hoping the eagle might fly toward me. . That sort of worked, it flew somewhat toward me but then kinda veered right. At the closest point when it was coming toward me, it was filling the frame, but I didn't get focus. Even with good gear and skill there's a lot of luck involved in getting a good frame in the ideal fraction of a second. So these photos are pre and post that great 1/4 second. . I'll probably go back at least one evening this weekend. Experimenting with another edit since people (ok, me) liked that previous monchrome image.I wanted to try something similar with a backlit image. . I think it's kind of cool, but might work better on a bird with a more unique profile or maybe its's the pose... . Anyway, what do you think between image one and two here? . Maybe I'm just dragging out this content, lol. Between heat waves, wildfires, bad air quality, and work, I'm not getting many pictures even when I do get out and generally having low energy. One thing I'm struggling with is not having a strong break between work and not work since I'm just sitting at the computer most the time. Usually going out for a hike provides that break, but I think with the heat, smoke, and my low energy, I haven't gotten a good dose of nature in a while and so I just have this lingering depleted feeling. . Hopefully I'll snap out of it soon. Maybe I'll make an overnight trip out to the coast this weekend and try to see some good birds. One time during my masters, I got a gig as an assistant for an or ornithology field trip. We drove and rode ferries all around the San Juan islands and saw lots of cool birds including puffins. I've never been back to any of those spots. Juvenile bald eagle at Horan Natural Area in Wenatchee, Washington. . I was looking for the resident moose, but I'll take it! . Anyway, as mentioned that n a short video that I just posted, I've been experimenting with some camera matching profiles for Lightroom by @will_goodlet and noticed that the monochrome profile he included to make skies dark looked amazing. This is an edit I'd have never thought to try on my own and rarely do monochrome edits but I really love the look. . Also, I don't know Will or anything (although I watch his videos on YouTube) and I'm not out to promote his products but I did think it was worth giving the guy credit because I really like this edit a lot and barely made any changes beyond applying his profile. So many eaglet photos. . Tons more are ready to share and already up on my website (link in bio, DavidFromEarth.SmugMug.com). I have even more on my camera that are not processed yet. . The little eaglet is much larger now than in these photos and starting to look more like an eagle with it's feathers coming in. . Some of these photos are cropped in so you can see more of the details. I wish I had the chance to have people see these pictures on something other than a phone screen, though. I feel like cropping in in just the eagles us kind of like if someone presented you a nice meal and you just grabbed the protein off the plate and ate it in one bite with your hands and walked away. Maybe you feel like that's the best part, but kinda sucks for the chef. But, well, I'm vegan and I haven't eaten out in over a year, so what do I know. Weird choice of analogy and sounds a little hoity toity. Consume my pictures however you want. I'm just glad you're consuming the images of them rather than their flesh.
