So today was my “Bali Birthday”. The Balinese celebrate birthdays every 6 months. My brother in law and sister in law came over to do the ceremony, which consists of offerings, incense, and holy water. Afterwards we ate many of the offerings that were set up on our gazebo table.
I just love the local fruit here, which are so good and something you don’t find easily in the west
This is called Salak, or snake fruit because the skin is scaly like a snake. It has a unique crunchy texture and a sweet-tart flavor. It’s high in potassium and beta carotene.
This is rambutan. The white or translucent flesh is juicy and sweet, similar to a lychee or longan, with a single almond-like seed in the center. High in Vitamin C and antioxidants.
This is manggis. The flesh is creamy, meltingly soft, and offers a perfect balance of acidic and sweet flavors. It is rich in antioxidants and has strong anti-inflammatory and anti-cancer properties.
It was a very memorable, and moving ceremony. I feel so blessed to be loved and accepted by my Balinese family.
