God Bless the Child| Alex & Mackenzie
'The Owl' as the fellow doctor's called it wasn't that special, or so Alex thought. While to some the bright lights and old-fashioned glamor might seem appeasing, to the pediatric's fellow in question, it just sort of made him miss Seattle more. But he bit the bullet and stayed for a drink. Only one, because while his shift was complete, Alex was still responsible for several patients that he really didn't think would require his assistance tonight. He sat with Ally and Garrett. The other two, Russ as he was now nicknamed and the other brunette he couldn't remember the name of had entangled themselves from the group and vanished into the night. For the most part, Alex was silent. He almost felt like he was intruding, because the way the Lewis kid kept looking at him, it was extremely clear that he was hoping for Alex to take a hint and scram. He didn't feel like it yet, though. Alex was still enjoying his beer and taking a look at all the unfamiliar sights and sounds of a completely new environment.
This bar was less loud and boisterous as Joe's. The chairs were slightly uncomfortable, but maybe that was because he was used to stools. Generally, Alex just didn't really like it but he was trying his best to fit into his new home and he knew the most logical first step to do that was to let the others dictate where he go and what he do. But only for awhile, because soon he had to head back to his apartment and call Addison, then hopefully catch a few hours of shut eye before he went back to work the next morning. The three were just discussing what adventures the other two might be getting up to and Alyson was pestering Alex to get another drink when his pager went off. Frowning, Alex pulled it out of his pocket. Before he even had the chance to focus his vision enough to read the message, another series of beeps cut through the still air where the threesome were currently occupying. "Dammit, there goes our night," Alex muttered to the other two while quickly jumping to his feet and grabbing his jacket. "Pity, I was looking forward to a round of darts." Garrett said whimsically with his eyes on the only female present. Alyson shrugged him off with a simple eye roll, before muttering a quick "Let's go, I'll drive," before leading the way out of the bar.
Apparently there had been a big car accident and they needed all hands on deck. As soon as the three drove up to the hospital, they caught sight of Dr Devereaux ad Bolton who both looked flushed and still elated at something. While everyone else pestered them to know where they had disappeared off to, Alex focused on putting his trauma gown on and looking back and forth down the hall. He'd never been here for a big accident like this, and while he had been working at Hopkins for almost a month, this would be his first test under pressure. "Just shut up everyone." He barked at the others, taking a deep breath to maintain his control before the group teared off towards the ambulance bay. After several hours, of which consisted of Alex scrubbing in on several back to back surgeries, there had only been five confirmed fatalities from the six car pile-up. After doing his job of attending to the family, Dr. Karev made a hasty retreat back to the familiar ward he belonged and finally took a look at the clock overhead. He was already an hour late doing his rounds.
Without waiting a second longer, Alex grabbed a clipboard and shook himself back into the moment, inhaling deeply before walking through the door to his first patient: Mackenzie Rae Prentiss. Mackenzie was a seven year old girl with a a severe osteosarcoma she was being treated for. This past month she had made several trips in and out of the hospital with her dad to keep up with her chemo, but had been admitted early this morning for being exhausted and weak. Alex wanted to keep her here overnight so that he could keep watch over her and run several more tests which were scheduled for this afternoon. "Sorry I'm late, how's Mazkenzie doing this morning?" Alex asked good-naturedly, his voice instantly switching from its previous anxious tones to a sincere kindness that was often hidden from most. "Did you get any sleep?" Alex asked directly to the little girl, allowing her the chance to answer before her father inevitably stepped in and spoke for her.
