i haven’t read the book but it sounds like the question you need to ask yourself is what is the symbolism behind the physical journey (‘the road’ i’m guessing) and try to tie that symbolism to the overall theme/message of the story

thanks love :) that helped a bit. All i've got so far is that the road is a "cheese grater on the soul" and that the road is a mental state as well as a physical state. I mostly just really fucking hate summer homework. PLUS i have opening night of my show tonight and my brain never starts working until like 5 and I won't be home until like 10 and...dear god i'm just so fucking stressed
