The Wild in 2050
The number of koalas in the wild, which numbered more than 400,000 in the 1980s, has declined to about one-tenth by around 2020. Habitat loss, stress from environmental development, and accidents with motor vehicles are the main causes. In addition, climate change in recent years has caused massive forest fires, which have led to a rapid decline in the koala population. Some predict that wild koalas will become extinct by 2050.
