6: were there any books you meant to read this year but never got to?
well i have stacks of 30+ books that ive been meaning to read but definitely wasnt expecting to read them all this year. ive been accumulating books faster than i can read them bc 1. i had so many books to read for class this semester i barely had time to read for fun and 2. the history lounge has a library that profs donate books to and theyre all free for the taking and one of my profs is retiring this semester and gave away most of her books. so i got a lot of books for free, mostly history books but some fiction as well (franz kafka, jane austen, dostoevsky)
anyway in terms of specific books, i have been meaning to read nona the ninth and i got a copy for christmas so thats pretty high on the priority list rn

I tried listening to the first prep episode and my episode waned. Is that a sign that this may not be for me, or does it just mean I should just skip ahead to the first play episode?
it starts out pretty slow and pretty long? I listened to the prep episode for the same reason as to why I’m listening to them in order instead of skipping to season 2, which is one of the recommendations for new listeners who want to get straight into the swing of things, namely because if I skip/listen to anything out of order, I won’t be able to pay attention to anything that’s happening and will instead fixate on “oh god did I miss some tiny detail that will end up being massively thematically important”
that being said, pretty much nothing important happens in the prep episode that isn’t explained in episode 1 re: the characters or the world, or that you’ll just learn by them interacting? so the prep episode is fairly redundant, I just wouldn’t have skipped it because I can’t listen in peace if I don’t listen to everything
that being said, the first couple of episodes in my opinion fall into “good but not great”, both in terms of the players are learning the game, the world doesn’t have major hooks yet, and events don’t seem to have large overarching impacts; it’s just kind of an adventure. the same way that the beginning of Here There Be Gerblins at least in my opinion was good but it wasn’t revolutionary? it was just three people figuring out how to play DnD who weren’t really sure about who or what their characters were yet. but then you push through and things get to “holy shit this is a STORY”?
unfortunately I don’t reaaaaally think the first four episodes of Autumn in Hieron can be skipped, if only because that actually does have important worldbuilding moments and character interaction moments. it definitely does pick up, though, it becomes very very different in that it becomes a lot more engaging because suddenly actions start having really interesting consequences once you’re more than five episodes in? my advice would be to wait it out until you’re a little bit into the split-arc before making a judgement on whether or not it’s for you, things get a lot tighter than the prep episode, which has a lot more tangents than the play generally does, but it isn’t until the end of the first mini-arc and when people split that things start to really be put into motion, but that also definitely is a question of “are you willing to invest ~5 hours before this goes from hm mkay pretty good?” to “holy shit this is great”
I would say, I think it’s good for a fairly different reason than TAZ is good? TAZ is a combination of a really good story with really good podcasting? in that the characters tend to pick the immediately interesting thing to do and have over-the-top things that they do and say and it’s full of hilarious moments, Friends at the Table is intrinsically really serious. It’s a hardcore fantasy world that takes everything that happens in it seriously in a way that TAZ only sometimes does? which means the payoffs in TAZ when a goof came back to have huge implications were really satisfying in a different way than Friends at the Table is satisfying, if that makes sense? I’d still recommend at least giving it a go, I don’t know enough about your tastes to say anything more?

You’re strong enough to carry that weight if that’s what you decide, but you could just as easily begin something fresh and new.
