Regarding that ask you answered a while ago about Mo Dao Zu Shi, can you help me with the name of that piece of clothing (is it some kind of chinese glove?) the characters use over the end of their sleeves? Hi! Can I ask what the ties around the sleeves of the woman from your recent post about Red Cliff are called? (I think they’re probably used to keep sleeves from getting in the way while she rides horses and shoots arrows?) Thanks! Hope you’re having a great day!

I have seen pictures of hanfu where there is are strings tied around the sleeves of the Yishang (correct me if this is the wrong term). I was wondering if the strings have a particular name and what the purpose of this is. Thanks in advance! =)

The strings tied around the sleeves of the Yichang in the photo above are called Bangshoudai/绑手带 (hand wraps). They’re basically a simplified form of the Huwan/护腕 (wrist guards) seen in the photo below (Image Via):

These forms of accessories were commonly worn in ancient China during strenuous physical activity, such as manual labor and combat/sports (hand-to-hand combat, sword-fighting, archery, etc). Their purpose was two-fold: 1) bind up the sleeves for convenience, and 2) protect the wearer’s hands and arms.
