CH1
Hater sighed loudly, hoping that his angry sighing would convince his video game to work.
“Stupid console, with its stupid glitch…” He grumbled, digging through the console itself to see if there was any obvious problem. Not like he’d know how to fix it, anyhow.
Suddenly, he heard a loud rush of watchdogs outside his room. Even after becoming a “good guy”- Hater’s still getting used to the term- he decided to still live in his Skullship. Why not? After all it has everything it needs. And Wander and Sylvia don’t mind actually having a roof every now and then either.
Speaking of Wander, Hater had a sneaking suspicion that the sudden crowd of watchdogs had to do with him.
Putting the game console down, Hater made his way through the crowd to the cafeteria, where they were all gathering.
And yes, it was Wander and Sylvia in the center of the crowd. Sylvia saw Hater coming and quickly whispered something to Wander before Hater could get into earshot. He could tell Wander was holding something, but he couldn’t figure out what it was since Wander’s back was to him.
“Uh, Hey, Hater! Big news!” Sylvia laughed awkwardly, looking over to Wander for help.
“Hater, meet our new family member!” Wander giggled loudly, holding out the little green Zbornak proudly.
Hater blinked in shock.
Wait… new family member… Sylvia was never pregnant… that means…
“Yep!” Wander answered Hater’s unspoken question, “We’ve finally found our perfect, adoptable baby! Isn’t he the cutest!”
Still silent, Hater stared at the tiny Zbornak in Wander’s hands. It was strange seeing a Zbornak that small, since he was so used to Sylvia’s size.
Wander didn’t say anything for a moment, letting everything sink in for Hater. The watchdogs had finally simmered down, too, waiting for Hater’s reaction. Being a “good guy” didn’t exactly get rid of all of his temper, but the watchdogs already loved the baby, so they hoped everything would turn out okay.
Slowly, very slowly, Hater reached out his hands to hold the infant Zbornak.
Everyone watched closely. He had yet to show any emotion other than silent shock. Was he okay with it? Was he angry?
“… Hater?” Wander asked quietly, leaning forward so he could see Hater’s expression closer, as well as the baby.
Suddenly, Hater’s eyes started welling up, and his lip quivered at an alarming rate.
“AAHH!” He screamed, startling all the watchdogs. He gave the tiny Zbornak a huge hug, squeezing it tightly against his cloak.
“Hater! Hater!” Wander and Sylvia screamed, trying to pry the baby out.
“Hater!” Sylvia shouted, “You’re going to strangle him!”
Finally, Hater loosened up his arms to release the giggling- and still breathing- baby back to Sylvia.
“Is he… Really ours?” Hater asked Wander, his eyes big and watery.
Wander nodded, grinning wider than ever.
Hater faced Sylvia, and held out his hands again. She paused for a moment, but eventually sighed and gave the baby over.
“No squeezing this time.” She ordered.
Hater looked at the tiny life in his hands. It was so small… Hater was worried it might just float off into space, it was so light. Do Zbornaks really start off this tiny?
Slowly, the baby looked up, actually making “eye contact” with Hater. As much eye contact as you could consider for a baby. Once again, the waterworks came out. Hater usually held back tears in front of the watchdogs, since it was lame to cry in front of them, but this was way bigger than being lame or cool. This was… This was…
His son.
“What’s his name?” Hater asked quickly, lifting the baby up to his eye-level. It giggled and waved its dangling little feet around.
“We haven’t named him yet,” Wander said, “We were waiting to see what you think…”
Hater was quiet, staring at the laughing little baby. Suddenly, it must have discovered its own hand, and quickly shoved it into its mouth, getting drool all over Hater’s hands as well.
“Bu! Bu!” It laughed, moving its tiny hand around its mouth and laughing.
“…Busker.”
“Huh?” Wander asked, confused.
“Busker.” Hater repeated, finally looking away from the baby.
“Busker…” Wander echoed, looking between Hater and the baby. He nodded, with a huge grin.
“Hater, it’s perfect.”
