A collection of three neoclassicals around the Kotzia The City Hall is center of the municipal activity in the city. It was built as a two storey building in 1874 CE with a third floor added in 1937 when the city activities grew. Melas Mansion was for a time the largest privately owned building in Athens. Designed by E Ziller in 1887, the mansion with two towers was planned as the Grand Hotel, but that never happened. After a hundred years of mixed use, it is now the Cultural Center for Bank of Greece. Bank of Greece is the central National Bank of the country, divided from Melas mansion with a small side street and a restored section of the Acharnai road of classic age. A modern building in the corner between Melas Mansion and the neoclassic contains the Administration of Bank of Greece. The square was established in 1874 on the area formerly known as Loudovikou Square, just outside the Acharnian gate og the hellenistic Athens.
