Deacon’s “wife”, Barbara, was actually originally part of the University Point Deathclaws. She fled when she began questioning if she herself was a synth, and she happened to meet Deacon.

He never thought they’d go looking for her, so he figured that pretending to be her husband would be a decent enough cover for her to live a simple life while he continued his work with the Railroad… until they did indeed find her.

Deacons backstory is mostly true- except for the fact that it wasnt really 'him'. Deacon is actually the synth replacement of someone who was in the UP Deathclaws, and went rogue and eloped with Barbara. The reason the Deathclaws found them was because someone had tipped them off about Deacon being a replacement to get rid of him, but the message got mixed up and they killed Barbara instead. That's why Deacon feels like a fraud- because he feels like that's what he was made to be all along.

Deacon is Johnny D, he really was the founder of the railroad with his, at the time, wife ‘Barbra’ she was killed by Deacon in self defense when the first HQ was compromised. She was the one who sold out and leaked the HQs Slocums Joes location.

Headcanon time! Deacon has a hard time remembering what Barbara looks like but certain landmarks help him resurface old memories and if he has the time he likes to look at the view and try and memorize it so he can remember Barbara's face :)
