Barbara Markay “Give Your Dick To Me” Benelux release (1981)
This did happen in 1981. Long Island musician Barbara Markay was a child prodigy who studied through The Manhattan School Of Music and received a scholarship from Julliard at age 10. She transitioned from classical to pop music performing in bands throughout Miami Beach, New York, and London where her bands performed songs like “Give Her Dick To Me”, playful numbers where Mackay was upfront and unabashed about her sexuality. Songs such as this almost caused riots in women’s prisons and not because her single was horrible, though most people will tell you otherwise. (Real reason: female prisoners would rush the stage and guards drew weapons on them.) Released only in Benelux and Japan, Markay’s single was panned by almost everyone and has been remembered only for being one of the worst songs ever made, but it didn’t stop her from working with other major-league artists such as Carly Simon, George Duke, Quincy Jones, Michael Jackson, Bruce Willis, and more. Whether it was the negative criticism, subject matter, or overall quality of her brand of pop, Markay moved far away from this and other sexually-themed singles when she met her meditation teacher in New York City. Since then, her music has matured and utilizes world rhythms, new-age, zen, and spiritual vibes to all of her records. She knows and acknowledges her past input, but with her current stage of zen and meditation, she’s matured above and beyond to even want to talk about it.
Shown here is the Benelux sleeve. Want to see how wild the Japanese sleeve is? Brace yourselves.
A belated April Fool’s.
