Barbieshop - Little Flame (Elle S'appelle Cover) - Live at Mello Mello, 2nd March 2012
Elle S'appelle had an album launch last friday in Liverpool, and it was fantastic! They were supported by an all-girl barbershop group called Barbieshop, and they did this great cover!
More Barbieshop stuff over at facebook
I'll post about Elle S'appelle properly later, such a good band. It's good to see they're kind've back!

10/11/11 @ Mojo - Phil Oskoui
I’m going to be honest straight from the start, when I was asked to cover this particular gig; I didn’t exactly jump at the chance. Call me a musical snob, my single minded, inexorable attitude can sometimes get in the way when I am trying to branch out and sample new delights. Having done a bit of research into the various acts that were on the bill, nothing really sent the old excitement-ometer crashing through the roof. There was even a band WITHOUT guitars playing! I was worried; it was a first for me. Someone hold my hand please...
So the first band to step up were, quite literally, a sight for sore eyes. Having crawled from the underneath the fallout of popular scenesters goFASTER! and Elle ’sappelle (all the boys hail from goFASTER! with Lucy from Elle ‘sappelle lending her unique vocal qualities). I was pleased to see these comforting and familiar faces having rehearsed in the same place as goFASTER for years and shared the bill with Elle ‘sappelle a couple of times. I was sure what I was about to see would be in the same vein as what had come before, and I wasn’t wrong. Yes Lord Sugar play songs that are easy to listen to. Some call it Power Pop. That arty, definitively british sounding experimental genre. Using a mixture of electronica and bright guitars, unexpected drum beats and rhythms and clever harmonies to layer up their sound. Yes Lord Sugar are not the most melodic band in the world, nor will a mosh pit be forming at their gigs, but their music is well crafted and intelligent and I expect this band to be a prominent fixture for the not so distant future. A successful first gig for them all in all.

Mojo was filling up nicely as the next group took to the stage. Barbieshop are a female three piece a’cappella outfit. Performing covers in a cute, almost music hall style. From ‘’Mr Sandman’’ to ‘’Creep’’ by Radiohead in the blink of an eye. This group made me smile. Their take on songs are original and quirky. With some simple choreography to accompany, their well worked out harmonies are the key to their success. Quite simply, mesmerising. Someone in the crowd said to me that they would be a great act on Britain’s Got Talent. They definitely would, but somehow I can’t envisage these girls stooping down to that level. They are too cool for that. Favourite song: Teenage Kicks by the Undertones. Well in girls. The crowd loved ya’s.
I had been told by reliable sources that the next band to play were ‘’the shit!’’. With a name like Dog Is Dead, I wasn’t so sure (again my musical snobbery is rearing its ugly head). I had been told that this band were an acoustic-ey, folk type group, again utilising vocal harmonies for their sound. Well they do use harmonies, but that’s were the similarities end. Don’t get me wrong, some of their harmonies lend heavily from a Mumford and Sons soaked universe. So much that at times you can literally hear Marcus Mumford bearing his big, bearded influences all over Dog Is Dead. That’s not to say this band are simply mimicking other groups. They definitely have their own sound, and it’s good. Catchy, sing along songs that get the ever swelling crowd pushing forward. Clever use of a sax player who sometimes plays bass and a singer who plays guitar and bass. Their use of harmony is emotive and well placed. I would definitely recommend seeing this band, they are already turning the right heads, having played Glastonbury BBC Introducing and appearing on some popular TV shows. It seems Dog Is Dead can do no wrong.

Stealing Sheep were the next act on. Another female three piece hailing from the Mersey shores. Described as psych-folk on their MySpace page, Stealing Sheep combine 60’s style psychedelic guitar sounds with long, synth produced overtones and an almost tribal sounding percussive rhythm. This accompanied by what I can only describe as Gaelic style harmonies, it is very hard to pigeon hole this group as a result. There was a few technical glitches that hampered their set but the girls soldiered on. I have to say, on the night, I just didn’t get it. This band, slotted in between Dog Is Dead and Summer Camp seemed to be a grave mistake on someone’s part. The girls are all clearly good musicians and the way Emily Meghan Lansley plays guitar is interesting and intriguing as a fellow guitarist. I also have to say I loved Luciana Mercers percussive talents, and the way she plays, almost dancing along to the music shows her passion, and her enthusiasm is conveyed to the crowd. But I still walked away feeling a little dismayed by this group, they have had great press coverage around Liverpool and have a good following around the country it seems, I just didn’t see it on the night. That all changed when I listened to their new album – Noah and the Paper Moon. It is a folkster’s delight, that organic, almost earthy sound that the gypsy in all of us desires. It’s a lovely piece of modern folk and I would recommend you stop reading this right now and rush out to purchase it (OK, finish reading this first).
So here we are, Mojo is definitely ‘rammed’. The stage has a white backdrop set up suggesting some visual treats for us punters. I notice that there is no bass amp on stage, OK, not to worry, the night hasn’t turned out like I expected so far. Summer Camp are a New Zealand band, I like New Zealand. It gave us the All Blacks Haka, Flight of the Conchords, the Kiwi fruit, so I’m ready to give these a shot. In fact, has New Zealand given us anything bad? I think not. Summer Camp consist of singer Elizabeth Sankey and multi instrumentalist Jeremy Warmsley, there was also a drummer but I have been unable to find any info about said man with sticks.
I Want You by Summer Camp
The gig starts with the two in the middle of the crowd, wielding an acoustic guitar; they start playing without mic’s. The crowd hush as they make their way back to the stage. Just in time for the drums to kick in and we are away. The next 45 minutes is a sickly sweet, post American dream slice of cheesecake. With songs about love (and the lack of it), lost times together and quite possibly, one of the best duets I have heard this side of the millennium (Losing My Mind). Summer Camp have the crowd lapping up their take on modern life. Elizabeth Sankey has a certain kookiness and elegance about her which keeps the blokes interested and the girls a little bit envious. Her voice is a piercing shot of familiarity, not unlike the late 80’s style girl groups that swamped the charts. Jeremy is her unlikely counterpart, a talented musician whose vocal textures perfectly compliment Elizabeth’s sublime voice. Together they look like a strange couple, together they make amazing music. Let’s hope they stay together for a long time.
Down by Summer Camp
Summer Camp have just released their first album ‘’Welcome to Condale’’. Listen to it peeps; I promise you will love it.
So having been dreading the night at the beginning, I have to say I thoroughly enjoyed myself tonight and saw some music that I would have never dreamed of getting to see had it not been for me writing this. Hats off again to the venue Mojo for putting such a good standard of talent on and forever improving the image of music within the city. I hope to see some as good as bands playing when Liverpool Music Week is over.
