Tbh I really hate "brainrot" as a term. It was kinda funny as a term for absurdist funsies for a while, but then we got to unironic "[insert thing] rots your brain! For real!" Oftentimes this is based on Christian pseudoscience (hello, porn discourse) or just a way to insult someone for having tastes and hobbies you dislike (or engaging in the same hobby as you but in a less self-aware, detached way) but even when it involves genuine cognitive decline or slowness after using certain things, I dislike it.
The imagery is so damn cynical and imo misleading. Maybe it's not that deep, but it bugs me! Things don't un-rot, but you can always form new neural pathways! No one is doomed to be a zombie NPC because they used the wrong app too much for too long. I think simplifying things to "rot" is unhelpful because it just gets used as a shorthand for "get stupider" or "lose moral fiber" when the conversation about what you do online, how often you do it, and what you do offline encompasses a lot more than just "website bad, get off website" (even if in some cases some people really do need to get off that damn webbed site).
I'm a boomer who doesn't always adapt well to new online lingo but on top of that I'm trying to hopemax and this doesn't help.
