Sidon had not come to bed.
He hadn’t come to bed for the past week; you were certain that he hadn’t even stepped foot in your shared bedroom at all. Of course, you know why he is not here right now but that doesn’t make his absence any less noticeable. Rolling over to look at the empty space beside you, you let out a soft sigh and grip the sheets.
After a moment of wallowing in self-pity and longing your brows furrow and you shoot up into a sitting position, pushing the sheets down with the abrupt force. Sidon couldn’t keep doing this to himself, no matter how much is on his plate, he could not continue sacrificing his health in order to read another document and give a dozen more signatures. You needed him here and he needed a break.
With that resolve in mind you slip out from under the covers and hurry out of the bedroom hurrying down the hall in the direction of your lover’s study.
Approaching the door of your destination you were confident, ready to put your foot down on the matter and put your prince to bed. You didn’t expect it to be particular difficult to convince him - Sidon was never hard to persuade when it came to you but when it came to royal duties he did tend to get a little stubborn as he wanted to get as much done as possible which is what drove him here tonight. The closer that you drew to the door the more nervous you got.
If he was still in his office after so long it surely meant that he was busy right? Would Sidon be upset having his work disturbed? He had never gotten mad before but he had seemed much more irritable these past few days so you really didn’t want to push him too hard.
With a light knock on the door you call out, “Sidon, it’s me, can I come in?” There is no response. You figure that maybe he just didn’t hear you so you called out again, lauder this time. Still no response. At this point, you sigh and crack the door open just to make sure that you weren’t just calling out to an empty room. Sure enough, you could see his large figure hunched over his desk with his arms wrapped around his head; he had fallen asleep.
A small part of you thinks the sight of him snoozing away at his desk is cute, but the rest is worried because for Sidon to fall asleep at his desk he must be exhausted. Approaching the desk you move to his side just to confirm by the Zora’s face that he is indeed asleep; still gripping a quill in his hand.
Shaking your head with a small smile, you put your hand on his arm and give it a light shake in hopes of waking him up since carrying him to bed really isn’t an option. “Sidon, sleeping beauty, it’s time to wake up,” you whisper feeling the Zora stir under you before he slowly sits up yawning. If the drowsy look in Sidon’s eyes and tired droop to his usually energetic face weren’t enough of an indicator of the Prince’s exhaustion then the groggy way that he responded to you was sure to sell it.
“Yes… yes, I’m awake… Did you need something…?” He asked raising the quill to dip it in the bottle of ink and go right back to the papers with little hesitation.
“Yes, I need you to come to bed. You’ve been in here all night love,” you say placing your hand on top of Sidon’s to still it.
He stops for a moment, staring down at his documents - you can’t quite see his eyes to confirm it but you can tell he is contemplating something - until he lets out a deep breath gently moving his hand away. “Sure… I just have to finish a couple more papers. I’ll be there soon.”
You sigh in frustration and raise your hand to his bicep giving it a light tug. “That’s what you said yesterday but I still didn’t see you. I know that you’re tired, why not just come sleep. The work can wait till the morning.” You insisted with another tug.
Sidon seemed to grimace and then brushed your hand finally turning to look at you with an expression of displeasure that you never thought would be aimed at you. “Love I have to finish these reports, please just go back to bed. It’s late.” Your face heats up scowling as he turns away from you once again. “You don’t think I know that? That’s why I’m here. It’s late and we should be in bed - yet, here you are working yourself to exhaustion and here I am trying to prevent that.”
“I’m fine... I’m fine. Love, please just go-”
“No! Sidon you collapsed at your desk because you haven’t been getting any sleep these past few days. The papers can wait, but you need to rest.”
Without warning, you reach out and pluck the quill from the Zora’s hand provoking a near instantaneous reaction from the prince himself. He turns to you with an even more disgruntled look as he held out his hand very firmly requesting it back. But you stand your ground holding the writing utensil behind your back, out of his reach. It didn’t matter if Sidon got upset with you; at least when the Zora finally gave in and came to bed, this sour mood he was in would also be put to rest. In just a moment he would realize this and would follow you with a tired smile for a good nights sleep.
Having the 10 foot Zora suddenly stand up and tower over you making you step back a little under the prince’s intense gaze. “Give me the quill.” It sounded more like a demand than a request this time which startled you, he had never used that tone with you before.
“Sidon,” you said hesitantly taking a step toward him, “just forget about the papers for now and just come to bed, okay?”
“They’re not just papers!” Sidon shot back making you jump in alarm. “This is the future of my people if I can’t handle this then I’m not worthy to be a prince. I wouldn’t expect you to understand that. Now I order you to give me that quill!”
“Oh you can order me around now?” You spat at him fighting back tears as you gripped the quill tighter. Sidon sneered at you, and you were all but certain that he might actually take it by force and hurt you even though you knew deep down that he could never bring himself to do such a thing. But even that thought didn’t seem to calm your racing heart at the sight of Sidon as you moved around the desk to put some kind of barrier between the two of you.
You were so terrified and at the same time so angry that it had gotten to this point. “What’re you going to do? Exile me for caring about your well-being? Confine me to our room? I’ve already been through that enough this week. It’s okay I know your kingdom is more important than me.” You instantly regretted those words, a wrenching pain in your gut making you feel sick. For a second you thought you saw the same feeling flicker in Sidon’s eyes but he hung his hide hiding his face before you could get a good look.
“Get out.”
Tears started blurring your vision hearing those words and prayed to the Goddess Hylia that you had just misheard him. “W-What…?”
He slams his hands down on the desk with such force that you swear the entire room shakes including your body. “GET OUT!” Sidon barks with a rage-induced voice you never thought possible of the male.
You jolt backwards and the tears break loose racing down your cheeks as you tentatively set the quill on his desk. It takes all of your strength not to break down sobbing while walking out of the room but the moment you close the door you can’t stifle the whimpers and sniffles. A loud clatter of objects hitting the floor erupts from inside the office, followed by Sidon’s voice shouting in frustration. You bolt away from the door before you have to figure out what had the Zora fuming.
Sidon didn’t come to bed that night.
