A handful of flyers are tucked under her arm as she swings her way into Beanie’s. She’s been sent on a mission by her Dad – the more information she spreads, the better her chances are of getting the dance cancelled. Local businesses had things like bulletin boards, community signs – places where people could spread their messages! A perfect opportunity for Grace to preach to the masses.

She drops them on the counter with a soft thud, and Grace’s hands rest atop the pile, smile wide and polite. “Good morning,” she greets, voice loud. “I’ve been sent here by my Church – I’ve been asked to hang up flyers. Is it all right if I put one on your bulletin board over there?” A thumb points over her shoulder to the rather crowded board, but she doesn’t mind. She’s sure she can rip down some old ones.

A trip to Beanie’s is like clockwork for Paul. It’s a comforting notion that his local coffee shop will always be there, always open. The coffee isn’t anything to write home about – he knows that. He doesn’t go there for the drinks, however – he goes there for the company. Despite his awkward nature and somewhat confusing demeanor, Paul managed to make a friend. And, if that friend just happens to work at a singing cafe, he’ll suck it up. That’s what friendship is about.

However, his gut sinks when he sees Zoey behind the counter. God, he does not want to hear her sing right now. The lack of line gives him nowhere to hide, and Paul approaches the counter carefully, lips pulled into what he’s sure is an uncomfortable looking grin. “Hi, Zoey,” he greets, voice nervous. “I – um, a black coffee, for me,” he adds, looking around for a sign of a familiar face.

The air is cold outside, and Tom is quick to slide into Beanie’s, his hands rubbing together to retain body heat. He doesn’t come here too often – only stopping by as of late to check in with his sister-in-law. Eyes peer around the open space, and Tom’s lips pull into a grin when he realizes he can’t see her. She’s not behind the counter, either – instead, a younger girl stands. Emma’s manager, he thinks, if his memory serves him correct.

So, he stands in line. And he waits, and he waits, and he waits. And, when he gets to the front, he realizes he has to order something to justify him being in line. “Ah, shit – hold on,” he starts, head tilted up to examine the menu. Eyes narrow, and Tom gestures wildly to something with a fancy name. “Can I get one of those, uh, Fuck Clivesdale cappucinos, or whatever?” He asks, confusion in his tone. Sniffling, he takes another look around before asking, “and, uh, any chance Emma’s in today?”

although none of the three major coffee chains in hatchetfield were worth two shits to linda, she had a need for a caffeine fixation. beanie's was on the way back from morning drop off, so the large escalade had pulled into the parking lot, and the small, wealthy woman had slid out of it and clacked her heels into the establishment.

" oh thank god. someone somewhat competent, " she groaned when she saw zoey at the counter. she was worried it was going to be the other barista who constantly acted like she had a stick up her ass despite choosing to settle for minimum wage. poor people problems. she barely looked up from thumbing a message on her phone with manicured nails to order, " i need a cappuccino with six pumps of sugar free vanilla, four pumps of sugar free hazelnut, and soy milk scorching hot. "

it was the friday after new years and emma was worse for the wear of it. not because she had spent new years eve at a rager, by any means. no, she had gone to the ccrp holiday party. then, she had spent a very lazy new years day off with ted spankoffski. lazy being a relative term, of course. but still, coming back to reality after that bubble? emma caught herself yawning more than the latte that she had made for herself could keep up with.

" you were gone for like twenty fucking minutes. we just had a rush! " she exhaled, trying her best ( and failing ) to mask her frustrations. " does that mean my fifteen becomes a twenty later too or . . . ? "
