Barn rules
If you ever go to your friends barn or something here are some rules that are pretty much normal for all barns.
1. Don't pet horses unless you have permission from the owners. Lots of horses are show horses, to avoid injuries like scratches don't pet them unless the owner is okay with you petting them.
2. Even if you brought peppermints for the horse, don't feed them treats unless you have permission from the owner. Owners know what their horses dietary needs are and usually have strict rules about treats.
3. No smoking or fire of any kind at the barn. In the bottom of the stall is woodshavings, horses also eat a lot of hay. Therefore the barn is highly flammable.
4. Know what is going on around you at all times. Horses are fight or flight animals, they will probably run if spooked.
5. This ties into 4 as well, if you're holding a lead rope remember two things. Don't let it touch the ground, if the horse steps in it and spooks they will hurt themselves, and don't loop it around your hand if they spook and run the loops will pull tight around your hand and you will be dragged.
6. Don't chase after horses if they are loose. They will run from you and you won't be able to catch them.
7. Never walk behind a horse unless you know the horse. If you need to walk behind them put your hand on their hindquarters so they know you are there.
8. Never try to spook a horse. Not only is that mean but you will put everyone around you in danger.
9. Always take a horses halter off before letting them go in the paddock.
10. Never wear neon colors. Neon colors spook some horses.
11. Sometimes people have wild horses that they try to train or they pay someone to train. If you see a sign that says that the horse in the stall is wild please stay away unless the owner tells you its okay.
12. Always listen to instructions and rules. They are there to keep you and the animals safe.
13. Be respectful of everyone there. Especially the other animals. Barns usually have barn cats and/or dogs.
So if you visit a barn please be respectful of the rules and people there.
