Man, I've been following you for the longest time now. If my memory is serving me correctly, all the way back when I saw some of your things on DeviantArt years ago. I gotta say, your art has improved immensely over the years, keep up the great work! <3
AHhhhhH thank you so much @anasihi! ♥Your message really warmed my heart, I’m so flattered that you’ve been following me for such a long time! ;w;Hope you’ll continue to do so, thanks again for supporting me~
I'm just wondering where you get your perception of Daniel's personality. You portray him as very sort of timid and apologetic, which he can be apologetic at times, but in games he's a very hardy, bold... insane man. I was just wondering where you get the timidness from?
I deduced it from his backstory! ^^
You’re right, anon, Daniel is indeed insane during the game’s events, and I agree with you that he wasn’t exactly timid when “painting the man" and "cutting the lines”.
Yet here’s what I personally gathered from the flashbacks.
Daniel was brought up in a very precarious environment. He had an alcholic, abusive father that regularly beat him and his sister throughout his childhood, plus, he was bullied in school as well. He was repressed, harshly taught not to fight back, and that’s why I see Daniel as the kind of person that suffers in silence until it becomes too much for him to bear, thus becoming prone to sudden violent outbursts. ->Henry Bedloe flashback
Because of his traumatic childhood, I see adult Daniel (and mind you, we’re not yet talking about the game timeline) as a nervous, timid man, unconsciously seeking approval from more dominating individuals, unresolved daddy issues that will come in handy later as soon as Alexander shows up.
I think he’s still a bit childish (“Like for drinking!" "Are there more… dead men there?”) at times, because he wasn’t allowed to live his childhood in first place. In my opinion, if only he was free of the restraints of his society, or the unfortunate set of coincidences that affected him during his expedition in Algeria, I see a potential for his character to grow into a very interesting and creative individual, and that’s what I hope to show through my crossovers.
Infact, if you follow Vampnesia, perhaps you’ve noticed that I made Daniel much less timid. He doesn’t remember his father, Alexander, nor the sequence of traumas that led him to act in a certain way. Vampnesia!Daniel is much more confident than my regular Daniel.
The Shadow, Alexander, and basically everything that happened in that damn game, encouraged Daniel on his path to insanity. All it took was a gentle coaxing by the baron into doing his bidding, plus the sensation of impending doom the Shadow brought along the weakening of Daniel’s mind, and there we get a desperate, cowardly man that would do anything to ensure his survival.
Daniel isn’t just that, though. After taking the amnesia potion, even though he was absolutely terrorized, confused, alone, and with an ancient curse after his supple ass, he had the guts to proceed through Brennenburg, gaining determination and resolve along the way into his goal of killing Alexander and get himself his redemption.Did he eventually do the right thing, or didn’t he? Interpretations are endless, just as multiple endings are possible.
