He tried to see beyond her lacking enthusiasm as he assumed perhaps she was afraid simply from nerves, the prospect of birth daunting as he imagined as so. He’s had his own share of the topic mainly in the courtroom, defending cases of child support, including high profiled athletes and politicians. Noah had never imagined a child of his own even as the situation was nothing like as he was used to handling. The thought of a newborn in their home was a miracle, and even though they didn’t plan for it, he assumed sooner than later they ought to start on a family. He loved her dearly as she was not only his wife, but her companion for life.
Noah was smiling brightly. “How long has it been. A week… two?” He asked eagerly as she imagined she experienced the onset of pregnancy symptoms as early as a month. His face instantly dropped, his expression turning into one made from confusion. Thirteen weeks? “T-That makes you three months along. You didn’t know?” He asked politely, peering down at the pregnancy test to reassure the truth before his shoulders had curved inwards, feeling the slightest deflate. Noah managed to muster up a smile, pushing aside the concerns he held. “Can I see? Your belly?” He asked, smiling up at her before he withdrew her hand, peering at her stomach hidden behind the layer of her sweater and he wondered how he’d been so unobservant? Perhaps it was due to the fact neither saw each other in the flesh no more than once a week if it was truly needed.
she smiled as she threw up her hands. “when i went off the pill, i still bled which apparently can happen. i thought i just had my period as i normally did.” she defended herself and sighed. “yes, a little over three months.” she told him with a small smile. it was hard, to have a child growing inside of you that you wanted, yet at the same time, didn’t really. “i think i must have missed a pill and not realized... or it was when i’d been ill but we had sex the morning after, i think? maybe that pill didn’t... work, i don’t know.” she told him and she smiled at his question. she had popped over the last few days. “there you go.” she said as she pulled up her thick sweater and showed off her small bump. “i’m not very tall so it will probably look humongous when i’m close to giving birth.” she joked and took his hand in hers, placing it on her stomach. she wanted to be happy. she really, truly did but it would take a while for her to accept her fate. he was a good man, he was good to her and he’d be an amazing dad. maybe... maybe now that they were bound by this child, she could get to a place where she could fully commit to being a wife. she leaned up to kiss him, as she thought of that. he was her husband, the father of her child and she didn’t want to raise this baby on her own. this had to work. “i love you.” she said, as she looked up into the eyes of the man she married. “you’re going to be a daddy.” she told him, smiling a little wider. she wanted to be happy. fake it until you make it, right?
