It had been weeks since Suzy had seen anyone she could call friends or family. The outbreak had hit California fast and hard. She could barely remember what it felt like to sit and laugh with the grumps. Her mind was filled with images of the last time she saw each of them alive. It haunted her dreams, the nights she was actually able to sleep, that is.
She remembered losing Arin and Danny on a supplies run. The young woman didn't actually witness them die, but she had to be realistic, nobody could have made it through that horde alive. She wished she didn't have to live in such a pessimistic state of mind. Suzy held on to the hope that Ross, Holly, and Barry had managed to survive the attacks.
She knew the married couple had began traveling as soon as the attacks began, so they may have had a chance. She honestly didn't know what had happened to Barry. She liked to think that he was holding his own. For some reason, the editor seemed like the type that could hold his own. Maybe that was just hope getting the best of her though. In times like these, she had to have something to hold onto.
Her eyes stared from the dirty window of an abandoned building to survey the street that lay ahead of her. It was crawling with zombies, but she needed to get to the grocery store that was set on the other side of the street. Suzy would have to act soon while she still had the nerve.
She quickly exited the abandoned building, machete in hand, and began slashing her way through bodies. A short time ago, she would have never been able to see herself doing this, but losing everyone she loved had changed her. She saw it as payback with every zombie she decapitated.
She eventually made it to the other side and into the grocery store. She was covered in grime and blood, but she was used to it by now. Suzy began surveying the aisles for more enemies when her eyes fell on a familiar face. She stopped in her tracks and opened her mouth to speak, though she couldn't quite form words at first.
"Barry!" She finally spoke, louder than she should have.
