Teatro Heredia (officially Teatro Adolfo Mejía) is a 700 seat Colombian theater located inside the walled area of Cartagena de Indias (Bolívar). Its construction, begun in 1906, was carried out in the place where the ruins of the Church of La Merced (built in 1625) were located, and with a design by Architect Luis Felipe Jaspe Franco, based on the Tacón theater in Havana. It was inaugurated on November 11, 1911 with the name of Municipal Theater on the occasion of the first centenary of the Independence of Cartagena, and its name was changed to Teatro Heredia in 1933, in commemoration of the fourth centenary of the founding of the city. The Foundation for the Conservation and Restoration of Colombian Cultural Heritage and the National Monuments Subdirectorate of the National Institute of Roads were in charge of the restoration of the theater, which led to its reopening in 1998. Located next to the Convent of La Merced, hosts postgraduate programs from the University of Cartagena, constitute an architectural intervention unit. A republican building of neoclassical features, it has a volume of two levels where the central entry is framed by three arches on the first floor.
