Details from my recent visit to the Hotel del Coronado - an historic beachfront hotel in the city of Coronado, just across the San Diego Bay from San Diego, California. Built in 1887, with it’s grand opening February 19, 1888. It is one of the few surviving examples of an American architectural genre: the wooden Victorian beach resort. It is the second largest wooden structure in the United States (after the Tillamook Air Museum in Tillamook, Oregon) and was designated a California Historical Landmark in 1970 and a National Historic Landmark in 1977. Royal Alberta Museum (RAM) Finger Rock - a touchable rock covered in holes that was located near the entrance to the geology gallery (shown in these #throwback photos I took back in 2012, from the original Museum location). In geological terms, this rock is a voidal concretion. The rock was collected in Edmonton in 1968 from a city engineering storm sewer project. In 2016 the famed finger rock received a cleaning and spit polish, making it ready for a debut in the new galleries downtown. As a child, my family visited the original Museum on a regular basis, I always loved this rock; My brother, sister and I used to stick our fingers in the holes. Details of St. Nicholas Russian Orthodox Church from my visit here 2 years ago. Juneau's Gold Rush of the 1880s initiated efforts by various missionaries to convert the Native Peoples to their Faith. American Missionaries were instructed to suppress the use of Native Languages and as a result, many Tlingits chose to embrace the Orthodox Church which used Native Languages in worship. St. Innocent Veniaminov was the first to translate the Christian Scripture into Tlingit and taught Native Alaskans to read and write in their own language. Cobh (/ˈkoʊv/ kohv, Irish: an Cóbh), known from 1850 until 1920 as Queenstown, is a popular tourist seaport town on the south coast of County Cork, Ireland. Cobh is on the south side of Great Island in Cork Harbour and almost 100,000 cruise liner passengers and crew arrive in the town each year when their ships berth right in the centre of the town at Ireland's only dedicated Cruise Terminal. Tourist attractions are focused on the immense maritime and emigration legacy of the town. The Queenstown Story Heritage Centre, Titanic Experience, Titanic Trail walking tour, Cobh Museum, Cobh Road Train, Spike Island tours and St Colman's Cathedral provide plenty for visitors to see and do. The town has remained virtually unchanged since RMS Titanic departed from Cork Harbour in 1912, with the streetscape and piers still much the same.
