Kenneth Williams behind the scenes of “Round The Horne”, BBC Radio’s popular comedy programme, in 1968. 

“Round The Horne” was transmitted in four series of weekly episodes from 1965 until 1968. The first three series were written by Barry Took and Marty Feldman. In 1967, they created the characters “Julian and Sandy”, two unemployed camp actors, brilliantly played by Hugh Paddick and Kenneth Williams, both part of the supporting cast around the show’s protagonist Kenneth Horne. 

Kenneth Williams as “Sandy” together with Hugh Paddick as “Julian” introduced the unwitting British public to ‘Polari’, London’s secret gay slang when homosexuality was illegal (in the UK legalised in 1965). Their hilariously funny performances became eventually the most popular (and iconic) part of the series and certainly contributed to at least a wee bit of more tolerance towards the gay community at the time … 🌈

Radio comedy part 2 Round the Horne

This is amazing in that compared to other more well known programmes it is surprisingly forward thinking no first heard this from the Julian and Sandy sketches and have no idea how this got on the air! Kenneth Williams and Hugh Paddick are not just fairly camp but talking in non stop gay innuendo that I can only assume went straight over the heads of some people! It has a semi improvised feel that breaks out of the standard sketch show and is pulled through be Kenneth Horne's compere character. Betty Marsden, whilst the only woman in the cast, is actually given funny lines rather than just being a feeder. Overall there are usually a couple of 'lazy' jokes per episode ( usually coming off as racist or sexist) and it isn't all grade A material but there are more highs than many series per episode thanks to Barry Took and Marty Feldman. 'Lazy jokes' will come up in every older radio programme, and many new ones to be fair. It's worth listening to Julian and Sandy at least once and wonder if they were aware homosexuality was illegal at the time!

More Python Naming Rights

It took months for the Pythons to come up with a name for their show. Many were chosen and discarded, and some of those were recycled and used as the titles for individual episodes. Finally, the BBC announced that their time had run out, and they were simply going to have to make a selection, whether they liked it or not.

The BBC had been referring to the show as “The Circus” in their scheduling…
