In a dark and lonely corner of a timeworn dockside inn, a rather disheveled-looking man sat alone, nursing his gin.
Some might have called him the town drunk. But that wasn't entirely accurate. He only ever had one drink a night. And he would take hours to finish it, sitting in the corner, wallowing in regret and self-pity.
He stood up from the table, leaving a few bills behind as he left.
In the glow of flashing lights on the shoulder of the road, a battered woman stood alone in the pouring rain. Bruised and barefoot and shivering, she tried to signal to passing cars. But no one stopped.
She had wasted years of her life on a man who didn't love her back. She had thought at one time that he could change. And by the time she had realized that she was wrong, it was too late. She had no car, and nowhere to go.
So now she stood in the rain alone, praying to a God she no longer believed in to send someone to help her.
He was driving home when he saw her. She was soaked to the bone, clearly terrified. He was reminded of his own mother, of the way she looked after a fight with his father.
He pulled over. "Get in. I'll take you somewhere safe."
They sat in silence, not speaking. But they didn't have to say anything. Because the connection was made immediately.
She was his purpose. He wasn't worthless. He had just saved her when it seemed no one else would. That had to count for something. All those empty years didn't seem to matter as much now. Because his life wasn't empty anymore.
He was her sign. A sign that she was doing the right thing. Proof that she would be okay. That she wasn't doomed to waste away in misery with a man who abused her.
Years later, they were both married. They had jobs and kids. But they never lost touch. They would stay friends until the day they died. Because they had given each other a reason to keep going.

Az Avantasia és a Delain új megjelenései után folytatódik a februári metál albumok mustrája. Ezúttal a progresszív metál nemzetközi helytartóinak, az amerikai-kanadai Dream Theaternek a legújabb kiadását, a Distance Over Time-ot veszem górcső alá. Az isteni formáció legutóbb csaknem három éve jelentkezett új szerzeménnyel, a több mint kétórásra nyúlt prog operával, a The Astonishinggel, ami…
