Oh man! Dre Babinski of Steady Holiday is on the show tomorrow, and we talk a lot about being weird and hiding it to not get hassled and how Dre formed her identity and tons of other stuff. Dre’s cool and funny too, and we have a lotta laffs on this one! Check it out tomorrow!
Title And Registration by Death Cab For Cutie from Transatlanticism (2003)
The glove compartment is inaccurately named And everybody knows it. So i'm proposing a swift orderly change.
Cause behind its door there's nothing to keep my fingers warm And all i find are souvenirs from better times Before the gleam of your taillights fading east To find yourself a better life.
I was searching for some legal document As the rain beat down on the hood When i stumbled upon pictures i tried to forget And that's how this idea was drilled into my head
Cause it's too important To stay the way it's been
There's no blame for how our love did slowly fade And now that it's gone it's like it wasn't there at all And here i rest where disappointment and regret collide Lying awake at night
There's no blame for how our love did slowly fade And now that it's gone it's like it wasn't there at all And here i rest where disappointment and regret collide Lying awake at night (up all night) When i'm lying awake at night.
10 years since game changer album 'Not Art' by Big Scary was released - to celebrate we've pressed a limited edition transparent orange vinyl, available via our shop or your fav record store. Order limited edition transparent orange vinyl
This album opened many doors for Big Scary and ultimately led to the official beginnings of Pieater. We have much to thank for the music behind the monstera leaf.
'Not Art' allowed Tom Iansek to develop his production skills, he explored sounds, textures, techniques and got to work with some incredible NYC talents first via gospel singers at Broadway Inspirational Voices and then Tom Elmhirst mixing the album. Jo also began navigating the industry beyond solely a musician, foraying into developing management skills and business nous, to make her one of the most talented & well rounded industry professional today.
We threw a party at our first HQ 'Mixed Business', released in the US with Barsuk Records, toured OS multiple times, got nominated for awards, won awards, played many fantastic festivals, grew the live band with Gus Rigby, Christopher Port, Callum Barter (FOH). We thankfully had the belief of Justin Cosby (Vale) and Mark Dodds at Inertia, Evan Davis at Village Sounds, Grant Gillies at GaGa, Natasha Bowron & Melody Forghani. It was these passionate early team members who helped make the difference to enable Big Scary to grow.
10 years on the music still sounds incredible, my current fav is 'Invest' and I truly can't wait to watch Jo and Tom perform this record again one day. Go give the brilliant ‘Not Art’ another spin, very happy listening 🧡

It's time for Beginnings, the podcast where writer and performer Andy Beckerman talks to the comedians, writers, filmmakers and musicians he admires about their earliest creative experiences and the numerous ways in which a creative life can unfold.
On today's episode, I talk to musician John Vanderslice. Raised in rural North Florida, Vanderslice was forced into piano lessons as a young child, and eventually picked up the guitar and started writing songs as a teen. After moving to San Francisco in 1989, John made three records as a part of the experimental band MK Ultra, including the critically-acclaimed The Dream is Over. His obsession with recording craft persisted: while working as a waiter at Chez Panisse in 1997, he opened Tiny Telephone Recording as an affordable outlet for the Bay Area’s indie rock community. Between 2000 and 2014, John released 10 records on Barsuk, Dead Oceans, and Secretly Canadian, and collaborated as a producer and musician on records by Spoon, the Mountain Goats, Okkervil River, Death Cab for Cutie and Tune-Yards. Taking a break from his own recording, he became a full-time producer for a number of years, and in 2018, John decided to leap back into his solo career with full force, releasing a number of albums and EPs, the latest of which is a tribute to Dave Berman entitled John, i can’t believe civilization is still going here in 2021! Congratulations to all of us, Love, DCB

I haven’t been to a concert since January. The FADER premieres the new album from Common Holly, ‘When I say to you Black Lightning’
When I say to you Black Lightning — premiering above ahead of its release tomorrow, October 18, via Barsuk Records and Solitaire Recordings — comes on the back of Common Holly’s 2017 debut Playing House, which saw Naggar examining her first major relationship and noticing that the growth she was seeing within herself was in fact a natural manifestation of life itself. The songs sounded both cathartic and starry-eyed, like dreams lifted from a young person's notebook. Listen HERE!
