30 Days of Writing: Diamond
The building had collapsed so fast it seemed impossible. Garrick had just looked away for a second to talk to the police and Bobomb, the fat little nerd, had sent off a shockwave powerful enough to destroy the support columns in the lobby.
A nail on his right hand had broken. Gritting his teeth, he ripped it off and quickly wrapped a scrap of someone’s cape around it. His best friend was under there.
Finally, with one great heave, he pulled away a rusted steel girder and a bookcase and saw Babette’s skull-patterned face. It was smeared with blood and her eyes were closed. Over her heart was a book that was stabbed through with a twisted piece of metal.
After a few heart-stopping seconds her eyes fluttered open. One pupil was bigger than the other.
She giggled and lifted the book, showing that the hard cover had stopped the metal from penetrating her.
“Mr. Shine, him diamond!” she laughed hysterically.
Garrick’s eyes darted to the book. It was indeed, Thud. A moment later, his laughter joined hers and drifted through the summer evening’s air.
