I didn't apply to Cornell University as a young man. When I was 17, I was not interested in dairy science, engineering, hotel management or playing goalie. More importantly I wouldn't have gotten in. I ended up in scenic yet underdeveloped Lewiston, ME. Sometime during my freshman year I acquired a Maxell XL II tape labelled "Cornell 5/8/77". I learned, listened, read about and played an immense amount of music in those years but that tape stood out. It was one of the only pieces of music that I preferred to listen to on my Walkman instead of through speakers. There was a hair salon on College Street that had this wild electric sparkling sign and I would trek over there at night and stand in front of it mesmerized while in the Phil Zone analyzing Scarlet --> Fire. 12 years later I got my first job as a lawyer and I was writing my first big brief. There were a few cases I needed that weren't on Westlaw but that the Cornell Law Library had. I had never been to Ithaca so I figured I could go to the Moosewood Cafe, hit the library and see Barton Hall where the show happened in 1977. Moosewood was tasty, I photocopied my cases and then headed over to Barton Hall. I don't know what I was expecting. It wasn't La Scala or Symphony Hall or Abbey Road but just a classic old gym. Nothing more nothing less. That show was 40 years ago today. The buckling above was named Jerry. His brothers were Bobby and Phil. Their mother is Scarlet Begonias. I guess once in a while you do get shown the light. #gratefuldead #cornell77 #babygoats #bartonhall (at Barton Hall)
