Tips on selecting the best suitable Backstop Barrier Net
Baseball Netting: Improve View and Safety with Backstops
Professional and little leagues, schools, sports facilities as well as backyard fields, all have barrier netting. A strong backstop net offers an inexpensive and convenient way to prevent balls from injuring fans and players. It also deters balls from leaving the playing area. Available in a range of sizes and a choice of portable or permanent solutions, it protects people as well as property. Many baseball dugouts also have rails with netting in front to keep balls from rolling in and also for the safety of the players in the dugout.
With several products being sold in the market and each one claiming to be the best, selecting the right one could be challenging. Read the tips below to make an informed choice.
How to Select a Backstop Barrier Net
· Mesh size: This refers to the net squares (or holes) and is determined by the size of the ball you need to contain—in this case a baseball. Since more material is required for smaller size meshing, naturally the price is higher. Choosing a net that will contain a golf ball is not only unnecessary, but also expensive. Mesh size 1-3/4″ or 1-7/8″ is typically used for baseball and softball.
· Material: Polyethylene is UV and water resistant, which means it will not rot or fade easily. However, it has a lower break point than nylon and is not as strong.
· Gauge: The higher the number of the twine, the thicker it is and longer it will last. The size widely used for baseball is #36. If you want to maximize your investment, consider #42. Note that the #60 is the thickest gauge available but not recommended because it is too heavy.
Make Your Netting Water Resistant
Water resistance is critical to maximizing the service life of your backstops. After all, these nets are too large to be taken down and stored away in inclement weather or even the winter. While poly nets are water resistant, nylon is not. The ideal solution is to purchase a latex-treated nylon or, have it treated before you install it.
How to Install Your Backstop
Square mesh barrier nets offer clean installation and are true to size dimensions with minimal bowing. (Knotted barrier netting is more durable than the knotless kind.) Hang a vertical net to minimize the amount of baseballs being hit into areas where the balls are not wanted.
