Many people would recognize this iconic beat, produced by Based TJ and 6silkyy, due to its virality as a trending TikTok sound in 2020-2021, whether they associate it with Playboi Carti’s version, or Tony Shhnow’s.
The rappers take different approaches to this beat, demonstrating its versatility. The beat’s melody is incredibly simplistic and spans a four bar loop, establishing its main motif. In typical plugg fashion (see our Genre Spotlight here) the beat itself is minimal, using hi hats, snares, and claps, and a punchy 808 kick that perfectly punctuates the looping melody and establishes the rhythm.
Tony Shhnow’s approach to the beat involves him singing to the tune of the melody for the hook (“walked out looking like money/look what I got on!”), while Carti’s approach punctuates it in the space between the beats (“Ooh girl look at him/Ooh girl look at him”).
The beat’s virality, years after its initial release, can be seen as a testament of the timelessness and appeal of Based TJ and 6Silkyy’s beat, as well as a nod to the influence of the Soundcloud Rap era of the mid 2010’s, and the plugg sound that came out of it, to this day.
