This house I chose to represent the tension between the American dream to own a house meeting the housing developer for the first time. As we face a housing crisis again I found the origin story of Westlake, Daly City the perfect vernacular expression of American populism mashed up with high design, manufacturing and a long shadow of social-cultural impacts. These “little boxes on the hillside” have a fascinating decades long history of the social and cultural impact of planned and gated communities on our society as a whole.
