A strong breeze swept across the plateau, stirring the dust and whipping at Keith’s hair. He sits, perched at the edge of the rockface, where the earth gave way to sheer, layered stone; one leg drawn close to his chest, while the other hangs, calmly, down the side of the cliff. From here, he could see clear across the valley, to where misty blue mountains lined the horizon, framed by the sultry red glow of the setting sun.

Keith turned sharply ‘round at the sound of Shiro’s voice, glancing up and over his shoulder at the man behind him. He greeted him wordlessly with a warm half-smile. “Just when I thought I’d escaped,” he remarked, tone light and cheeky. When the nurse told him he could go for a walk, no one said it had to be inside the compound.
Sighing, he let his gaze drift back to the sunset.
“ It’s weird . . . how quiet everything is. ”
