@basilkincaid 🎨 “On Whiteness: A Death of the Heart” 2020 - You ever think about how white people would lose their mind within a week if they woke up one day and were some how black? ... You ever think about how all the greatest atrocities of all human existence were perpetrated by white people? ... but when I think of the whole of whiteness and white people I think most clearly of James Baldwin and the wide sweeping lack of moral fortitude, the moral apathy, and the death of the heart that I see. ... And my brother asks “what of the ‘good’ ones” what of them because I don’t see them making any difference. I don’t think any of my white friends would put the livelihood of their families on the line for me let alone a black stranger. At the end of the day I feel like all white people want to keep their comforts, their inheritances, their head starts, their sense of entitlement and security, their tiny problems. At the end of the day white people want to keep their whiteness even when they pretend they don’t. And, therein lies the death of the heart. I remember talking in 2012, seeing farther into the future, imagining a big prize and major impact. Recently we realized that we have the capacity to start where we are and do what we can, so we're doing just that. I'm overwhelmed with joy to announce the opening of the first Black Bag Award, a cash prize for young black artists in St. Louis. Right now we don't have a lot to give but I know the impact of every contribution people have made into my passion and practice, it all counts. We take direct agency in our role in the cultivation of a culture of compassion and service wielding art as a tool for self and collective liberation.
