Jessica and I headed out to the West Desert for some austere scenic beauty, fresh air, blue skies, a bit of hiking, and a search for wild horses. We scored on all accounts, though the horses were (very) far off in the distance. Last October we took a short 2 day trip to Confusion Mountains and House Range region of Utah's West Desert. The rocks that make up these mountains are old ... very old. The Confusion Mountains are comprised of Silurian Period rocks that range from 443 million to 416 million years old. The House Range rocks are even older: 541 million to 485 million years ago ... a half of a billion years old. Hard to comprehend. The rocks were largely laid down in ancient oceans and fossils can be found of long extinct sea creatures such as trilobites and brachiopods. The California Gobi, A favorite spot, which I've nicknamed the California Gobi for its barren gravel strewn slopes. A harsh, alpine high altitude desert, cold and windswept.
